Murderer in the Dark

Now you have all heard of the game Murder in the Dark. There are many different ways to play it. Personally my family, friends and I have always played it like hide & go seek in the dark. Some play it with cards. Others play by pretending to be dead.

Billionaire James Maximus greeted a game. Where four random people where thrown into a forest to play Murder in the Dark. No one but James knew who the 'murderer' is. Everyone believed it was a fun game and the winner got a million dollars. Except it is no game.

James made a deal with a demon to spare his life, by giving him three souls every year. It's been going on for a decade and no one has caught on. But this year it will be different. How? You ask, well you are going to have to read to find out.

Annie's POV

Hi everyone Annie Hale and I was invited to play a kids game on a show. In a chance to win a million dollars. I wasn't going to participate. But then the accident happened. One night my parents were driving home with my little brother when they got into a car accident. My mum died on impact and dad died on the way to hospital. My little brother Tommy, was seriously hurt and might be paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life. Unless he has surgery done on his spin.

The thing is though I don't have the money for it or the care he'll need after the surgery. I had a small funeral for my parents. Anyway, back to Tommy. I could get the money needed if I sold my parents old house. But I didn't want to do that to Tommy. I wanted to raise him there. That's when I remembered the invite to the game and I called in to see if I could still enter. I could and now I'm meeting the other members fighting for the money.

The first is Daniel Johnson, he seems like a bit of a bad boy. He's arrogant, rude and seems to care only about himself. The next is Sophie Fox. She wouldn't get off her phone, keeps taking selfies of herself. While complaining about having to hide in a dirty forest. The last person is Oscar Wilfred and he seems like a really sweet guy. He's here for his little sister, who has cancer. He needs the money to pay for her transplant surgery, chemotherapy and medications.

"So you ever played Murder in the Dark before?" Oscar asks me.

"My friends and I used to play it during sleepovers. Somehow I was always picked to be the murderer" I tell him.

"Well this time, you're a victim" he tells me cheerily.

"Yeah, I hope I can survive it until sunrise. I've never been good at hiding" I tell him.

"You'll be fine" he assures me. "Tell you what, lets team up and when we survive. We'll split the money fifty/fifty" he suggests.

"Really?" I ask shocked.

"Yeah, we're both here for our younger siblings. So deal?" he asks.

"Deal" I say and we shake hands.

"You two are idiots" Daniel tells us.

"He's right, the only way to win is to look out for only yourself" Sophie states.

"You guys do your way and we'll do it our way" Oscar tells them.

"What he said" I agree. "Anyway, we should all get some sleep. So that we'll be alert for the game" I suggest. Sophie and Oscar agree. But Daniel says nothing and I go to sleep with the others. Not knowing that we'll all be fighting for our lives in four hours.

Demon's POV

I lounge on the couch watching as my new victims are loaded up into a truck. Soon I'd enter their minds and find their worst fear. Before giving them a nightmare, just before I go after them. I love to mess with my food. There's a knock on my door. "Enter" I say and James enters the room timidly.

"They are loaded up and are being taken to the site" he tells me.

"Good, I look forward to killing all four" I tell him.

"What?!" he exclaims. "Our deal was for three souls a year" he states.

"It doubles every ten years, did I forget to mention that?" I ask him with a smirk.

"But that means six have to die and we only have four" he states scared.

"I already had two souls, why else do you think Miss Hale is here?" I ask him.

"You caused the accident that killed her parents and injured her brother?" he says shocked.

"Yes, I did" I state. "Now I will kill all four or claim your soul. Which will it be?" I ask him.

"Kill them" he stammers.

"Knew you'd see it my way" I say with smirk. "Now leave me, it's time to greet my victims" I tell him. He nods his head stiffly and leaves the room.

(Nightmare) Annie's POV

I don't know what happened. I was dreaming about my family being whole. Us having our family fun night, dad trying to cheat at monopoly. When suddenly I'm in a forest. "What the hell?" I say confused as I look around the dark forest.

"Hello Annie" a guy says and I turn to see a guy my age. Something about him, puts me on edge.

"How do you know my name?" I ask him.

"Oh I know a lot about you and the other three" he tells me. "For example, did you know Sophie's worst fear is being buried alive? Or that Oscar fears falling off a steep cliff? Daniel fears being ripped apart?" he asks me. I gulp and back away from him slowly and he smirks. "You're right to fear me" he states.

"Who are you?" I ask him.

"Who I am is not important, but what is important is your little brother Tommy" he states and we're suddenly in front of the hospital Tommy is at.

"How did you do that?" I demand.

"I can do a lot of things Miss Hale, like this" he says and snaps his fingers. Suddenly the hospital goes up in flames. I scream and go run for it. But suddenly he's holding me in place. "You don't fear death, you fear losing those you love. I'll enjoy watching you suffer before the end" he whispers in my ears as tears fall from my eyes.

"Annie!" I hear Tommy scream.

"Tommy!" I shout trying to break free of the man's hold. "Let me go! I have to save him!" I shout as Tommy continues to cry my name.

(Real life)

"Annie wake up" Oscar says shaking me.

"Tommy!" I shout as I sit bolt up. I breath heavily looking around the forest we're in. It looks like the one from my nightmare.

"It was just a nightmare, we all had one" he tells me in a soothing tone. Wiping a tear from my cheek.

"It was horrible, the hospital was on fire. Tommy was trapped, calling out to me. There was nothing I could do" I state. Suddenly a clock chimes. "What's that?" I ask.

"The start of the game" Oscar states.

"You all are whips, see you later" Daniel states.

"Maybe Oscar and Annie were right. Maybe we should stick together" Sophie says shaken.

"Stick together if you want, it'll increase my chances. Bye" Daniel says before leaving us.

"What's the plan Oscar?" I ask.

"We should get to higher ground, that way we can see if someone is coming" he states. I nod my head and the three of us head off. Sticking together.
