From Rags to Riches

Elizabeth Brown, or Eliza as her friends and family know her. Not that she has many friends and she only has one family member. Her grandfather, he and her grandmother raised her. As her mother died when she was born and they didn't know who her father was. Anyway, she was struggling to put herself through school and care for her grandfather. She would have loved to go to Harvard, where she got a scholarship. But she couldn't afford to go there to study and pay for her grandfather's medical bills. So she goes to the University of Buckingham Medical School and lives in a tiny apartment with her cat. But her life turns upside down with the leader of the Elites Incorporated, Adrian Harrington runs into her on a business trip. This is their story.

Eliza's POV

I sigh as I look at my grandfather's medical bill. How am I gonna get all that money when I have to go to school? I fold up the piece of paper and put it in my pocket. Getting up when I see two young girls playing. One falls over, I gasp and run over. "Are you ok?" I ask the girl concerned.

"Yeah, I'm ok" she assures me. I sigh in relief, then spot an ice-cream truck.

"How about I buy you both an ice-cream?" I offer.

"Really?" she asks. "Oh can we please?" she asks her friend.

"Sure, just don't tell our dad" her friend states. Well I guess sister. We head over. "I'll have the choc mint and Lily will have the strawberry" she tells me.

"Of course, one choc mint and one strawberry please" I tell the ice-cream man. He nods his head and makes up a cone for each girl. I pay for them and hand them to the girls.

"Thank you, miss..." Lily starts to say.

"Brown, but you both can call me Eliza" I tell them smiling.

"Thank you, Eliza" they says together. What well mannered young girls. Their parents have done an amazing job.

"Lily, Rose!" someone shouts.

"It's Uncle Adrian" Rose mutters.

"You two know better then to wonder off, your mother is frantic" a man states. He is hot. But no way a guy like that is single or ever go for an orphan girl like me. "I hope they weren't causing you any trouble" he tells me.

"No, they were perfect angels" I assure him. "Lily fell over though while they were playing, so I got them an ice-cream to cheer them up. I hope that's ok" I tell him.

"If Ryan asks, I'll tell them it was my idea" he says shrugging. "Here, for your trouble" he says handing me some money. "Come on girls" he tells them. I look at the bill and gasp. I try to call him back, to return it. But they were already gone. Who was that man? Why did he give me a hundred dollars for just being kind to those two girls?

Adrian's POV

"What was that girls name?" I ask Lily and Rose.

"Eliza Brown" Rose answers.

"She is very kind and pretty" Lily states.

"She is" I agree. As I think back to the young woman who'd taken care of my nieces. She was more then pretty, she was beautiful. I have to see her again.

"Thank god" Jenny exclaims when she sees us. "You two had me worried sick" she tells the girls.

"Sorry mum" they say together.

"Who got you ice-cream?" Ryan asks.

"I did" I lie. "We should go, we have a meeting to get to" I state. They nodded and set off for the car. While I take out my phone. "Joe, I have a job for you brother" I tell him.

"Of course you do, make it quick. Hannah wants me to get her pickles and cookie dough ice-cream" he tells me. Hannah is his pregnant girlfriend.

"Find out what you can for me on a Eliza Brown" I tell him.

"Who's she?" he asks me.

"Just a young woman I meet, good luck with Hannah" I tell him and hang up. I join the others in the car and we're taken to our meeting.

Eliza's POV

I sigh as I get home to my apartment. I smile as Raven, my cat greets me purring. I give her a pat and place my keys on the counter. Before going to do my homework. It's due Monday, then I have a test on Wednesday. So much work. And I need to look at getting a job, to try help pay for my grandfather's medical bills. I've been quoted between 14,640 and 21,251 pounds for his treatment. He fell and broke his hip. Sure he has health insurance, but it won't cover everything.

Raven jumps up beside me on the couch. "What am I gonna do Raven?" I ask her. She just nudges my hand and I smile gently. Patting her while I continue to work. She purrs contently.

Adrian's POV

The meeting went well and we've chosen to donate money to the local hospitals. We don't get anything in return. But it feels good helping those less fortunate. Just then Joe calls. "What have you got for me?" I ask him.

"Her name is Elizabeth Taylor Brown, she is uni student. She is an orphan, living on her own with a cat in a small apartment. Studying medicine, her grandfather is in hospital with a broken hip and they don't have the money to pay for his medical bills. She turns nineteen at the end of the year" he tells me. So she's only eighteen, no matter. I don't care, I want her.

"Pay her grandfather's medical bills and send me her address" I tell him.

"You're the boss" he tells me.

"Joe, where's my pickles and ice-cream?!" I hear Hannah shout.

"Coming sweetheart!" he calls back. "Gotta go brother, bye" he says and hangs up. He sends me a text.

"Was that Uncle Joe?" Lily asks.

"How's Hannah?" Jenny asks me.

"Craving pickles with cookie dough ice-cream" I tell her.

"At least she's not craving brownies with mustard" Ryan states. Jenny hits him. "Sorry sweetie" he says sheepishly as their daughters giggle. I smile, I can't wait to have my own children. But first, I need to make Elizabeth Brown my wife. Hopefully my sister Raquelle and her best friend Katie won't cause any trouble for her. I know Hannah, Cora, Jenny, and Blair won't. I'll make sure Jake keeps his sister in line. While Joe and I will deal with ours.
