chapter 1 | rich people

OUR STORY BEGINS HERE, as young Olivia Jones walked towards the Alvarez apartment, fixing her hair before knocking on the door and waited patiently for someone to open it.

Olivia never really liked her red hair since some people would make fun of it and it looks like the colour of blood.
The door then opened revealing her best friend, Alex Alvarez. He smiled widely at the sight of her and pulled her into a hug.

"Livi, you came!" Alex pulled away from the hug as she giggled. "Of course I did, silly." The two chuckled before walking back into the apartment, seeing Elena and Lydia at the kitchen counter talking to Penelope.

"She has to have a quinces. How else will we know the day that our little girl becomes a woman?" Lydia exclaimed.

"You missed it. I was 12, I was in the gym and ironically happened in first period." Elena smirked. Olivia laughed at the disappointed face of Lydia.

It seemed that they didn't know that Olivia walked in so she just sat on the couch with Alex as he listened to music while Olivia laid her head on his shoulder and played his fingers, ignoring the conversation happening in the kitchen.

Lydia then came over to Alex and he took off his headphones as she said something in Spanish to him and he said something back. Olivia looked at Alex and frowned in confusion.

"Don't worry I'll teach you Spanish next time so you'll understand." Alex laid his head on Olivia's shoulder and continued looking at stuff online as Olivia stroked his hair.

"Abuelita...I'll learn more Spanish when you learn more English." Elena smirked almost making Olivia laugh but she closed her mouth with her hand and tried to contain her laughter.

"I know the English. Besides your abuelo, god rest his soul, did not marry me for my mind." Lydia said. Elena looked around the room in disbelief, making her way to her room.

"Who do you think you're insulting?" Penelope questioned Lydia. Alex took his head off of Olivia's shoulder and looked at his mother.

"Good one mom. By the way, what are the last sixteen digits of your credit card?" Alex asked causing Olivia to chuckle. "Wow, so smart."
"I know." Alex winked causing her to roll her eyes.

"Uh, what are you doing? Are you shopping? Cause' who said you could shop? Oh and hi pelliroja (redhead). Sorry I forgot to say hi." Penelope said to Alex before hugging Olivia from the back and kissing her on the cheek.

Penelope was always like a second mother to her. Ever since Alex and her became friends, The Jones' and The Alvarez' became really close to each other and Penelope and Lydia would always take good care of Olivia when her parents were working.

"You said I could order sneakers for school." Alex said. "Five pairs?" Penelope scoffed.

"Monday through Friday. Don't worry I don't need weekend sneakers." Alex said and Penelope laughed. "Oh, well I can't have my son walking around in Monday sneakers on a Saturday. Somebody might call child services." Penelope said making Olivia chuckle.

"Mom I'm serious. I'm in middle school now, how I look, kind of matters." Alex complained.
"Okay, so you can buy one pair for under forty-dollars." Penelope told Alex.

"Forty?" Alex gasped dramatically and Olivia rolled her eyes. "Oh! I saw some sneakers online that were only 20 dollars." Olivia said from the couch as Alex turned to her with wide eyes.

"20 dollars?! Who are you Livi?!" Alex gasped once again, putting his hand on his chest dramatically. "Yeah Livi is right. And a pair of sneakers can last you the whole year." Penelope said.

"The whole year?! Okay mom, I know we're not rich, but are we poor?" Alex exclaimed. "Seriously Alex?" Olivia raised her brows as she scoffed.

"No. We're...fine." Penelope stammered. "That sounds like poor." Alex complained. "We're not poor! I mean, look around. We have a TV, a refrigerator, you have a laptop. And a really pretty best friend that's rich!" Penelope said as she pointed to the redhead on the couch which made her smiled sheepishly.

"These are things that poor people have! I mean, besides livi." Alex argued. "We have a refrigerator." Penelope continued. "You never let us turn it on." Alex fought back.

Olivia decided to listen to some music on Alex laptop to ignore the argument that was going on. She turned on her favourite song from her album on Alex laptop.

"Livi let's go to my room." Alex said as he took off the headphones on her head and grabbed her hand as the two went to Alex's room.
"so, are you gonna buy the $20 sneaker?" Olivia asked as she sat on the bed.
"No, but I have a plan." Alex smirked. "Okay...anyways I have to go. My mom is gonna kill me if I don't go back to my apartment." Olivia huffed.

"Alright bye Livi." Alex went over and hugged her as he kissed her on the cheek which made her giggle. "I love you." He smiled widely at her . "I love you too, papito." Olivia smiled before walking out of his room with a huge smile on her face.

"Oh hey pelliroja what are you smiling about?" Lydia smirked at the redhead. "It's nothing." Olivia chuckled. "Okay...bye pelliroja." Lydia waved at her.

"Bye abuelita, bye Penelope!" Olivia waved back. "Bye sweetie and say hello to your parents for me alright? And maybe bring Lucas here sometimes, I miss that little cutie." Penelope said. Olivia chuckled and nodded before heading back to her apartment.
