Red and Gold

King Henry's court on the eve of a wive's execution was like a court of shadows. No one spoke or drew any sort of attention to themselves. To do so would place a target on your back. So we all kept to ourselves and tried to stay out of the way while those in power played their sick and twisted political games.

I was sitting in my private parlor with several of the other court ladies when a page was announced. We looked up from our sewing, the sound of the herald's announcement the first words we had heard in hours.

The page bowed, placing a box on the small side table beside where I was sitting. It was a beautifully wrapped gift with red tissue paper and tied with a gold ribbon. The sight of the gift set the ladies to whispering as I set my sewing to the side to open it.

It was a beautiful ruby necklace set with a gold chain. Holding up the priceless piece, I let the light streaming through the window catch the gem, sending red sparks across the room.

"From the King?" Someone asked breathlessly.

I smiled, anticipating the game that was beginning. Placing the necklace back in its box, I replied, "From Alastor."
