Beaded Bracelet

Luisa; she/her
Y/n; no pronouns used.

Warnings: none.
POV: Second.

"Hey, Luisa!" You waved at your favourite Madrigal, walking after her. Every afternoon at exactly 2:09pm. Never a minute early, never a minute late.

"Good afternoon!" She gave you a nod as she picked up the donkey, throwing it up into the air before catching it snugly.

"How are you doing?" You walked beside her, hands behind your back comfortably.

"Donkeys." Luisa let out a soft groan, "I don't understand why the townspeople can't pick up after themselves, y'know?"

"With you around everything is a little bit easier." You gave her a warm smile. She looked down at you, returning that smile you gave her.

But something seemed a little off.

You couldn't place your finger on what was wrong, but it was... off.

Your smile seemed to drop, being replaced with a concerned expression. "Is something the matter, Luisa?"

"What?" She shook her head, laughing softly as she grabbed another donkey. "No, nothing's the matter Y/n. Don't worry about it alright?"

You decided not to poke at it, shrugging a little and reaching into your pocket. "This is for you! I had time to make this earlier and I wanted you to have it." It wasn't anything fancy. It was a beaded bracelet, pearly white and orange beads. It was simple, anyone could make it. "Nothing over the top."

Your eyes were on the beads, slowly moving up to meet hers. Luisa stopped walking, staring at the item in your hand.

It was so simple, yet so heartwarming. Despite all the work that she's done to help the village, the buildings she's moved, the bridges she carried, each donkey she brought back; everything she's done has been part of the day-to-day life in the encanto to the point that no one thought about what it would be like without her.

That was because they thought that she'd always be there. Not everyone saw her as her but instead as some sort of machine. She always picked up after everyone but what did she get in return?

Sure, sometimes few people baked cookies or bread and delivered it to le casita de Madrigal. But no one has ever put the time or thought into giving her something special and directed to her.

"Luisa?" Her silence worried you a little. Was it too simple? Was it not enough? You didn't know what went on in her life or what other gifts people could've given her. You didn't know you were the first.

"Y/n!" She threw the donkeys into their pen before sweeping you off your feet. Her embrace was tight, godly tight. "Oh, my lord! Thank you so much!" She laughed out of pure joy.

"Luisa! Luisa!" You choked out, unable to catch your breath. You knew how she could sometimes underestimate her strength. You viscously tapped her arm. "Loosen up, please!"

"Oh! I am so sorry!" She finally put you down, holding the bracelet in her hand and admiring it before slipping it onto her wrist. It fit snugly; not too tight that it would leave marks on her skin from the beads, yet not too loose that it would slip off with too much movement. "Thank you, Y/n. This means so much to me. Thank you."

The smile on her face was something that you'd never be able to forget. The way Luisa's eyes lit up and her sudden change in aura from the beginning of the conversation to now.

That made you wonder... if she was getting elated over a small gift such as this, was she even getting the recognition and praise she deserved?

"You're always busy and sometimes I wish we could have time to spend time together. Now you always have a little piece of me whenever you do your work." You rocked back and forth between your heels and toes out of excitement. No one has ever given you this much attention and appreciation. It made your heart flutter in a way you've never experienced before.

Luisa seemed to frown a little at the word 'work'. Maybe it was a sensitive topic? You didn't know. That's all you knew her for. There were a few times where you accompanied her during her chores, talking nonstop without a care in the world; talking about anything that came to mind. You felt like you could tell her anything like you didn't have to worry about talking too much or annoying her because she always reassured you.

She enjoyed your company. No one sincerely asked 'how is your day?' or even bothered to ask about how she felt. Despite being in a large family and having two sisters, amazing parents, and joyous cousins, she still felt alone in the house. Talking to you was her favourite part of the day and she always looked forward to it.

"I'm free tonight."

You perked up at those three words. "Tonight?"

"Yeah," she nodded, a bashful smile on her face. "East forest by the river."

"East forest... by the river?" It was almost as if your vocabulary was gone. The only words you could process and say were the ones that were given to you. You nodded excitedly, returning the smile she gave you.

"Make it a date."
