Cool air drifted in between the trees rustling the leaves and branches. The occasional bolder anchored itself into the sludge as the birds chirped and then flew at the slight scuffle.
Occupied Poland, Soviet Union. 22 June 1941.
Tank crews relaxed enjoying the fresh air and the space that they don't get much of in the T-26 Light Tanks. Smoking and playing a new game of cards under the warming sun. Enjoying a cool-warm temperature in the early morning.
One tank commander silently alerted everyone, "Сержа́нт"
The men stamped out their cigarettes and got into position.
Vera walked amongst the crowd of tanks, chuckling at their fear of punishment that wouldn't come from her.
"Ivan скоро приедет сюда. Убери это место," She hastily ordered as the group began hiding their previous relaxation to a greater degree.
"дерьмо" Vera muttered as the commanding officer for tank company rolled over in a vehicle.
The halt in the car got everyone to stand straight and give a salute to Ivan as he ran a quick check on the crew before giving an order for Vera.
"двигайте танки дальше в гору. Я теряю связь с другими командами. Никто не знает что происходит"
She nodded as Ivan began to step back into the car to be driven away. While beginning to tell everyone to rally further uphill, the ground shook.
A soft rumble at first, then a booming echo. The whaling sound of a siren drowned out the panic amongst the tank crew as small black dots in the sky grew into planes rattling the trees and leaves knocking off bits of snow onto the floor. The sirens shrieked louder and louder as bombs leaped from the sky and erupted onto the ground below. Melting through the tanks, sending shrapnel past people's skulls splattering brains out.
Vera blacked out. Only feeling the sharp heartbeats as her ragged breathing caused her eyes to snap open. She turned her head to see Panzers approaching her position with unending devastating shots of destruction.
Smoke rose to the clouds as was unable to get up or move a muscle. As the German army reached their position, she surrendered.
Like tiny ants, she heard the Luftwaffe spreading across Poland bombing city after city to pave the way for tanks and infantry. Carelessly thrown into a truck, Vera and another soldier were now POW, just as she blacked out again.
