Chapter Thrity-Two

Predator and Prey

We were in Zuko's workspace. He was doing his Fire Lord duties at his desk, while I was sitting on the couch reading a book.
"Did you know that Mai and Kei Lo broke up while you were at the South Pole?" Zuko stopped filling the papers in front of him.
"AAAnd?"
I looked at him with a raised eyebrow, while crossing my arms.
"I-No! Don't misunderstand already."
"It depends on your next words. So chose wisely."
I warned him.
"It was just surprising that they broke up after that day. Do you think it was because of me?"
"You're on thin ice, my Lord.."
"You know, I mean do you think Kei Lo misunderstood something so he broke up with her?"
"So you mean he thought there was still something going on between you guys so he broke up with Mai?"
I summed up, causing him to nod.
"It could be. I don't know. Why are you asking such thing?"
"I feel kinda guilty."
"And what do you want? To help them get back together?"
I asked him jokingly but he looked at me seriously.
"Immediately no! They are old enough to make their own decisions and they probably broke up because of some reasonable thing."
"But what if the reason was me?"
I sighed, putting the book beside me.
"Fine. I'll go ask Mai if you were the cause of their break up."
I said and stood up.
"I love you."
He smiled at me and gave me an air kiss.
"Ew."

"So the reason you broke up was..."
"Zuko."
Mai completed my sentence, because I was too shocked.
"So Kei Lo misunderstood something?"
She sighed.
"No... Kei Lo and I didn't just work. There were too many lies from the beginning between us and I'm still not over Zuko completely... I'm sorry, Ren. I really don't want to get back with Zuko. It would have been great if he had been like how he is now in your relationship at ours too. But he wasn't and he really disappointed me. I will never forget that."
I touched her hands. "I can understand you. Even now he's doing some things, which makes me so mad that I want to behead him but in the end I forget about it and let him wrap me around his fingers."
"I can see that."
She pointed at the ring on my finger.
"Congratulations."
"We're not getting married!"
"You're not?"
Mai asked confused.
"We are."
She got completely lost now .
"We're just engage. I'm not thinking about marrying at the moment."
"For now." She said.
"As you said, he can wrap you around his fingers. Today you're just engage but suddenly you're married tomorrow."
I began to laugh but she was serious.
"I'm sure Zuko will be persistent. So be careful, Ren. You can't lose to him. You have to hold the upper hand, I don't want you to end like me."
Mai said smiling at me softly, while squeezing my hand.
I nodded.
"Okay. That was too much emotions for today. I'll go back to work."
"Then I'll go back to the palace. That was fun, let's hang out again soon."
"We'll see." She said before she stood up to escort me.
"You can come to the palace whenever you want to."
"I refuse."
"Then I'll come visit you."
"I would like to refuse that either."
I smiled. Pretty sure she likes me.
"I'll make Zuko suffer, just for you."
I said before I got on the carriage. A weak smile appeared on her face before she waved.
"Bye."

"You're back!"
I heard Zuko, as I entered the palace.
"Were you waiting for me at the corridor?"
"Kinda.."
"Since when?" I asked him perplexed, as he took my hand.
"Not for too long."
I looked back at a guard, who gulped at my glance.
"Since when?"
I asked him instead. The guard look nervously between Zuko and me.
"Tell me, you don't have to be afraid of him."
"Since..one hour, my lady."
Zuko gave him a death stare.
"Don't frighten him! Why were you waiting one hour at the palace door? I would have either way come to your room first."
"I missed you."
"That's nothing new."
"Had Mai a bad influence on you? You're so sassy today." He pouted.
"And you're so whiny."
Now he looked really shocked.
"Fine. I'm sorry for missing my fiancé every time she's not with me and for giving her affections, which, how it seems like, she's not worth it."
He let go of my hand and left me angrily with the guards.
A sigh get out of me, as I looked at the guard again.
"I should apologize, shouldn't I?"
He nodded.
So I followed Zuko, who already entered his bedroom.
Was he always that fast?
"Zuko..."
"Get out."
He threw a pillow at me.
"I'm sorry."
"Pretty sure you're not."
He said, as he turned his back at me.
"I'm really sorry.."
My hand touched his arm hesitantly, before I hugged him from behind.
"I'm sorry, my love. Will you forgive me?"
"Depends."
Now he turned back to face me.
"What do you want?"
He hugged me too, while a smile appeared on his face, as he leaned down for a kiss.
"One more."
He whispered on my lips, before he kissed me again.
"One more.."
Zuko did this for a few time now, making my heart flutter every time he whispered one more.
"S-stop..enough."
I interrupted him out of breath.
"Just..one more.."
"Are you an animal, which is on his rut or what?" I pushed him lightly back.
"Maybe I am."
I gulped flustered.
"How..wait a second. Did you and Mai ever-"
"No!"
He cut me off knowing well what I was about to ask. So that's why he's behaving like that. I see. His holding it in for a long time. I should better be cautious around him.
"Kisses are fine. But not more than that before the wedding. So behave."
"I'm trying my best."
He hugged me tightly.
"Do you want to sleep on my bed tonight?"
"No. I should protect myself from you for a while before you attack me."
"I won't." He chuckled, making me anxious.
"Can you say my love again?"
"I'm not sure if it's a good idea now."
"Please.."
"Please, hold everything in and don't attack me...my love."
He chuckled.
"It's so hard not to."
"Zuko."
"I'm waiting eagerly for the wedding night."
A big grin appeared on his face, making me blush and gulp at the same time.
He was like a predator who was waiting for the right moment to catch his prey with his fangs.
I'm going to die...I'm sure about that..
"Oh, what did Mai say?"
He suddenly changed the topic.
"They had personal reasons to break up."
I answered.
"It's not my fault?"
"Kinda."
"It is?"
He asked me in disbelief.
"You were just one reason of many other. But it wasn't because Kei Lo thought there was still something going on between you guys."
"Then why?"
I hesitate.
How would he react if I told him she still has feeling for him? Would je be happy?
"Ren?"
Zuko made me come back to my senses.
"How was I involved in their break up?"
"She didn't get completely over you."
He hesitated, as his eyes got wider.
"I see.."
"And how do you feel about that?"
I asked him to get a better answer from him instead of just an 'I see'.
"How should I feel about such thing? It's true I was feeling a little bit flustered at first but nothing more. I got over about Mai a long time ago. So I hope she will get over about the past too."
"I love you."
He looked confused.
"What was that for?"
"I thought you deserved some affections too."
"You're really making it hard for me to hold it in."
"Then, I'll go. Good night."
I said and escaped before he could catch me. "Good night and sweet dreams."
I heard him before I left his room.
