Katherine and Shubble always wanted a kid. Though of course that wasn't possible if they wanted a biological one. However, they didn't need it to be a biological one. They only wanted a kid. And a kid they got.
So when they found a frail boy on the outskirts of House Blossom, they knew they had to adopt him. It was unexpected and they didn't have anything set up for the poor kid but they managed decently.
The child was a boy named Kyle and he was a fairy just like how Katherine was. Seeing as Katherine was a fairy she decided she'd be a good caretaker and a good caretaker she indeed was. She knew how to raise him and of course Shelby helped to the best of her abilities. Though the gnome did make a few mistakes, they learned from them.
The surprise adoption shocked many but all were supportive. Katherine and her gnome wife with their only son was the happiest they could be.
