Meredith had woken up a little before her chemo session would be over. She felt slightly better but the burning sensation from the chemo dripping into her body wasn't pleasant at all
"You're almost done." Dr Swender walked inside
Meredith nodded her head and let herself sink away in thoughts until she felt them unhook her again
"You're ready to go. Take it easy, okay?" Dr Swender said
"I'll make sure she'll get a good night's rest" Richard promised and led her out.
"Mer!" They heard Derek call out
"Mama!" Maddie smiled from her spot in Derek's arms.
"Someone wanted to give you a kiss before going home." Derek smiled. Actually he wanted to check on her as well, he was concerned and desperately wanted to be able to help
Meredith slowly kneeled down and hugged Maddie tight. "I love you so so much"
"I love you too, mommy." Maddie hugged her mother back
Meredith had a harder time getting up and sighed. "Be good with daddy."
"Of course she will be" Derek assured her
"Can I call?" Before bed?" Maddie asked as Derek lifted her back in his arms
"Well.." Derek sighed, knowing Meredith would probably be asleep
"Of course, monkey. I'll call right after you had dinner" Meredith nodded
"Kay!" Maddie giggled
"Okay Mads, give mommy one last kiss. We're all going home" Derek said as he saw the clear exhaustion visible in Meredith's face
"Bye Derek, bye Maddie" Richard smiled
"Bye monkey. I love you" Meredith smiled at Madie. "Bye Derek" She said and walked away
Derek and Maddie went to collect their stuff while Richard and Meredith left the hospital through the back entrance. She didn't wanna see anyone, she didn't even bother to change her clothes. Richard helped her in the car and drove her home
"You can lay down on the couch if you want." He suggested and walked her inside
"Yeah" Meredith agreed
"Hi dear" Adele walked towards them and helped the blonde lay down, tucking her in with some blankets to keep her warm and comfortable
"Thanks Adele" Meredith muttered
"Of course, now close your eyes and rest." Adele kissed Meredith's forehead softly
...
"Mer, wake up. Meredith." Adele tried
"Hmm.." Meredith groaned. "Maddie.." She whispers
"That's why I woke you. Derek texted Richard to ask if they could call" Adele explained
Meredith weakly pushed the blankets away and sighed.
"How are you feeling, dear?" Adele frowned as Meredith winced as she leaned forward to grab her phone
"Like shit" Meredith muttered. "Don't like chemo.."
"I'm sorry" Adele sadly smiled and rubbed Meredith's back softly. "I'll give you some privacy. No need to intervene you and Maddie's call" The older woman smiled and disappeared
Meredith facetimed Derek as she wanted to see Maddie. She felt her heart squeezing for her daughter
"Mer, hey. How.. How are you?" Derek asked as he picked up
"I'm fine. Can I talk to Mads?" Meredith then asked
"Mama!" Maddie gasped as she saw her mother
"Hey monkey! Did you have dinner already?" Meredith asked
"Yes! Daddy made mac and cheese!" Maddie explains
"Oh really?" Meredith tried to hide the disguised feeling she felt by the mention of food
"Yep! I got to decide!" Maddie smiled as she explained
"Mommy needs to go, monkey. I love you lots and lots." Meredith waved at her daughter
"Bye mommy! Can I see you tomorrow?" Maddie gasped
"If that's okay for daddy.." Meredith softly smiled
"Of course, Mer. We'll stop by tomorrow after lunch." Derek nodded
"Great" Meredith softly cracked a smile. "Bye monkey! Bye Derek." She breathed and hung up the phone, tears welling in her eyes
Right on cue Cristina was now calling her
"Cristina?" Meredith picked up the phone
"Mer! Why are you only working half hours? They say you're not even working tomorrow? That baby made you soft.." Cristina said
"I'll explain later. Do you need me?" Meredith asked as she laid down again
"I was gonna scrub in for a surgery and I needed a general surgeon" Cristina explained
"I'm sorry, I'm taking it easy-" Meredith tried but Cristina interrupted her
"Have to go, Mer! I have surgery!" Cristina hung up
"Right.." Meredith nodded and laid her head down again
"Hey, are you coming for dinner?" Richard asked her
"I guess.." She muttered and pushed herself up, shivering slightly so she grabbed a blanket and took it with her. She took a seat at the dining table and covered herself with the blanket
"Just some light food, try to eat as much as you can, sweetie" Adele rubbed Meredith's back
Meredith picked at her food, occasionally taking a small bite. She hadn't even noticed Richard and Adele were already done as she was lost in thoughts. Dark thoughts about Maddie and about their future
"Meredith, we can save some for you. Why don't you go lay down?" Richard suggested as he knew she wasn't gonna eat any more
"Yeah.." Meredith nodded and stood up, as she wanted to grab her plate Adele stopped her
"Let me" The older woman smiled
Meredith nodded and wrapped the blanket around her. "Goodnight" She said and disappeared upstairs. She drank some water as she felt her stomach acting up already. She really hoped she wouldn't have to throw up this early in her chemo treatment so she grabbed the meds she needed to take
Before she fell asleep she opened her phone and went through a few pictures of her daughter
Maddie was the most important person in her life. After she and Derek had their divorce she went back to Boston as she felt like everyone in Seattle had an opinion on them because their marriage hadn't worked out. Maddie saw her dad very often, she saw him even more then she saw him in Seattle when he was still chief. Luckily he had given up that job already. Both adults were still single and secretly hoped one day they would be able to restore their family...
But now Meredith was sick and it was worse than initially thought..
