"I wanna go home.." Meredith whined as Alex was sitting next to her
"I know, Mer." Alex brushed his fingers over Meredith's head that was now covered with a scarf as bald spots were taking over
"Mads.." She whimpered in Alex' arms
"She's okay. Derek took her to the zoo today, and I have a feeling he'll try to sneak her in today." Alex tried to comfort her
"I don't want her to lose her mom." Meredith quietly admitted her fears
"She won't. damn, Mer. You've been receiving these chemos like a champ." Alex hugged her
...
Meredith had been laying down in bed the rest of the day. She'd been hooked up to tons of medications to fight the infection. Her fever had come down but was still a little issue
Her head was pounding so she tried not to move at all. For the first time since finding out she's sick she felt like she could lay down and feel bad for herself
Until now she always tried to sound positive for her daughter, not wanting the little girl to worry about anything that had been going on
"Meredith?" Richard knocked on the door but she faked she was asleep. Richard walked up to her bed and sat down on the chair, reaching out for her small hand. "You know that I know you're awake, right?"
He heard Meredith softly sigh and watched as a single tear streamed down her cheek
"Hey, it will be okay." Richard dried her tear
"I'm tired.." She whispered
"I know. I'm sorry for making you leave work. But I had to." Richard said
"I know. Sorry for reacting that way." Meredith apologize
"It's okay sweetie. It's okay." Richard stroked her cheek. "Try to sleep some more, Derek and Maddie will be here in a little while."
Meanwhile at the zoo Derek was having a hard time with Maddie
"No! I do that with mommy!" Maddie screamed
"I know, Mads. But maybe for once we can do it together?" Derek suggested
The girl had cried that she wanted to climb the rope park on the playground but now she refused to do it with Derek
"I want my mommy!" Maddie sobbed
"You're getting tired, why don't we go to the hospital to wave at mommy? We can come back some other day to see the elephants, is that okay?" Derek suggested, feeling bad for his daughter, understanding why the girl was so upset
"Otay.." Maddie nods and didn't stop crying. She kept sobbing in Derek's shoulders as he carried her towards the exit
Derek hated the stares people were giving him, as if he was taking bad care of his daughter while in reality they were facing one of the hardest things ever
Even during the car ride Maddie kept asking for her mom while sobbing
"We're here, Mads. Let's go wave at mommy, okay?" He got out and lifted her in his arms, making his way up to the ICU
"Mommy!" Maddie spotted her mom through the window, Alex still inside
"Mer, look!" Alex smiled and raised the head of the bed so she would be able to see her daughter waving
"Mads-" Meredith teared up and weakly waved
"Why does mommy have a scawf awound her head?" Maddie curiously asked
"Oh.. Because mommy's cold, sweetie." Derek couldn't face to tell his daughter the painful truth yet
"But it's not cold?" Maddie frowned
"Remember the yucky medicine? They make mommy feel cold."
"Oh.." Maddie nods and keeps waving, her tears finally stopping. "Can I give mommy cuddles now?"
"No sweetie. We still can't go inside, I'm sorry." Derek said and saw tears welling up again
"Maddie-" Meredith gasped as she saw her daughter cry. "Help me up. Now." Meredith sterky said and threw her blankets to the side
"You're not going out!" Alex said sternly
"I wanna go to the window." Meredith said and pushed herself on her weak legs, Alex immediately helping her up as he saw Derek worrying what was happening
Meredith slowly made her way over to the window and placed her hand on it, Maddie doing the same
"Please let me go out. Please." Meredith begged
"Mer.. The germs.." Alex sighed, hugging his friend and helping her to stay upright
"Please. Just one hug.. My fever's down." She begged
"Sit down and I'll go get gowns and masks." Alex eventually gave in and helped Meredith to sit down on one of the chairs. Then he went to Derek
"What the hell is going on?" Derek asked
"Give Maddie a gown and a mask. I'm getting a mask for Mer as well. Stubborn woman!" Alex groaned and went to get the stuff
They then got Maddie ready and Alex head inside to dress Meredith. He helped his friend to the doorway where Derek was holding the little girl
"Mads. I missed you!" Meredith hugged her daughter as tight as her body let her
"Mommy!" Maddie whimpered. "I want you to come home!"
"I know sweetie. Just a little longer, I promise I'll come home as soon as possible. I promise." She kissed the girl's head, her mask still covering her mouth and nose. "I love you so much"
"Now let's go back inside, Mer. If Richard finds out he'll kill me." Alex said
"We'll call you later. I promise." Derek said
"Love you, mommy!" Maddie whimpered
