It was Monday morning. Later today Meredith was supposed to get another round of chemo but right now she had decided she needed to lay down for a minute. Except it hadn't been a minute
"Meredith?" She heard Derek call out for her as he entered Meredith's office
"Mama!" Maddie shook Meredith's arm gently
"Oh- I was just about to take a nap" Meredith yawned
"Mer, it's lunch already. Come on, let's go downstairs in the cafeteria. Maddie wanted you to join us." He smiled
"I'm not really hungry.." Meredith sighed
"You really should try and eat something." Derek reached his hand out for her
"Okay." Meredith slowly sat up and pushed herself on her feet to follow them, she wrapped her arms around her waist
"Mama, I want fries! Can I have fries? Daddy, can I have fries?" Maddie was her usual self
"Sure monkey." Derek laughed.
"Can nanas have fries as well?" Maddie asked
"Of course. Give us a hand, baby. I don't want you running around the hospital" Meredith reached her hand out for Maddie
"Lift me?" Maddie looked up at her mother
"Oh-" Meredith doubted
"Daddy will carry you so mommy can carry Nanas" Derek intervened
"Thanks." Meredith quietly said to Derek. She grabbed Maddie's stuffed animal and carried it to the cafeteria but stopped a bit before they entered as she suddenly felt dizzy
"Hey. Take it easy." Derek stabilized her
"Dizzy-" She muttered and held his arm
"Let's sit down." He led her inside and helped her sit down. "I'll go grab us lunch."
"Mama, are you kay?" Maddie asked concerned
"Yes baby. Just got a bit dizzy." Meredith rubbed Maddie's back
"Do you need to have the yucky medicine again?" Maddie asked her mother
"Yes baby. So tonight you'll stay with daddy." Meredith said
"But mommy, I don't want you to be 'lone! Daddy and I have to take care of you!" Maddie sternly said
"Poppa Richard and aunt Adele are home, baby. I will be just fine." Meredith assured her daughter
"No! Poppa Richard said I have to take very good care of you!" Maddie stated
"Monkey.." Meredith sighed, knowing she was getting weaker after every single chemo session but tried to hide it from her daughter
"Lunch is here!" Derek placed their plates down. "I didn't know what you'd want to, so I grabbed a large portion of fries, and two salads. Either with mozzarella or chicken"
"I'll grab the mozzarella one." Meredith nodded her head. "Thanks. Thanks a lot." She smiled weakly
"Daddy?! Can I have some of your chicken?" Maddie gasped
"Look what I got for you and mommy." He showed you a box with nuggets
"Thank you daddy!" Maddie gasped and digged in
Derek started eating his salad and looked at Meredith often, seeing she was picking at her food
"Try to eat a little" Derek squeezed Meredith's hand. She nodded but after a few pieces she was done already
...
"Derek, you don't have to come.." Meredith quietly said as her ex husband led her to the oncology ward
"I cleared my schedule for the day and Maddie wouldn't stop begging anyway." Derek winked. "Come on, I brought us some things."
Meredith got brought to her room and they attached the wired to her port. Maddie was carefully watching to make sure no one hurted her mom
Maddie placed a soft kiss on her mom's chest next to where the port was. Derek covered both girls with the blanket and before he even tucked them in, both girls had drifted off already. He chuckled a little as Maddie and Meredith were so alike
As time passed by Maddie woke up again. Derek tried to assure her it was normal for her mom to sleep this much, explaining she was sleepy from the medicine
"Daddy, I think we should stay with mommy." Maddie said
"Monkey, mommy's staying with Richard and Adele.." Derek tried to explain
"But mommy needs the best doctor! And that's you!" Maddie sternly said
"We'll see.." Derek sighed. "Come on, keep coloring your picture."
"I need to check on mommy!" Maddie abandoned her picture and asked her dad to help her get on the bed. She snuggled in her mother's arms
"I'll turn on the television for you." Derek said so Maddie would have something to distract herself. He turned the volume down to make sure Meredith wouldn't wake up suddenly
Hours later by the end of the round of chemo Meredith was awake and held tight onto her blanket as she felt herself getting weaker. She was getting a terrible headache and her stomach started to turn
"Here-" Derek handed her some water and watched as she drank but spilled as her headache was too severe
"Hmm.." Meredith groaned as she stopped drinking and pulled the blanket over her head
"Bailey will be here soon. She'll clear you to go home and then we're gonna drop you off" Derek promised her
And so they did. Derek helped Meredith and Maddie into the car and drove towards Richard and Adele's house. He walked Meredith ti the front door while Maddie kept begging to stay with her mom
"Hi sweetie, how did it go?" Adele opened the door
"She's having a headache. Can Richard administer some meds?" He asked
"Richard got called away for an emergency.." Adele sighed
"I'll do it" Derek nods and scoops Meredith up in his arms, not wanting her to struggle to get up the stairs. He placed her down on the bed and opened Meredith's cabinet, trying to find some good meds. He got everything ready and injected it into her port
"I'll get dinner ready. You two are staying right?" Adele asked
"We can stay." Derek nodded, stroking his ex wife's arm
Maddie kept holding onto her mom's hand. She knew this wasn't normal and she was a little scared for not knowing what was going on
"Maddie, do you wanna help me prepare dinner?" Adele asked her
"Gotta watch mommy." Maddie said and climbed in with her mom. "Daddy, I don't like mommy getting yucky medicine.."
"Me neither monkey.. Will you and nanas watch mommy for a bit?" He asked as he wanted to see if he could find her another blanket, he noticed she shivered a little
"We're watching mommy! Promised!" Maddie nodded and placed Nanas on Meredith's chest. "Love you mommy"
