"Don't look now, but that girl has been staring at you since she came in,"

Sam discreetly whispered to Lena behind the bar. Lena couldn't help but roll her eyes. It wasn't unusual for the waitresses to attract attention at the small diner where she worked. All sorts of people walked through its doors - parents with children, teenagers on dates, older couples, and even the occasional flirty trucker. The girls usually let the flirtation happen, knowing that the bigger the flirt, the bigger the tip.

With a playful smirk, Lena gathered her tray and tucked the tablecloth into the pocket of her diner outfit. "Well, looks like I'm in for a generous tip tonight," she said, shooting a mischievous smile at Sam, who playfully stuck out her tongue in response.

Walking over to the booth in the back where the girl was sitting, Lena greeted her with a warm smile. "Hi there, welcome! Can I get you anything?" she asked politely, her eyes meeting the stranger's gaze.

The girl looked up at Lena, her cheeks slightly flushed. "You have... really pretty eyes," she blurted out, immediately shaking her head and chuckling awkwardly. "I'm sorry, uh... I didn't mean to say that. What's good on the menu?" she quickly asked, trying to change the subject.

Lena's smile widened, genuinely appreciating the compliment and the girl's endearing rambling. "Well, we have a really good apple pie, and today, the strawberry milkshakes are two for one," she replied, hoping to make the girl feel more at ease.

The girl smiled back, but Lena noticed that it didn't quite reach her eyes. Concerned, Lena furrowed her brow when the girl didn't respond. "So... what can I get you?" she asked again, her voice filled with genuine care and curiosity.

The girl looked up again, her voice filled with a hint of sadness. "Would you mind sitting down for a while? I can get the milkshakes. I'm just feeling a little low," she answered.

Lena couldn't help but feel a pang of empathy as she looked into the girl's big blue puppy dog eyes and saw the hint of sunshine blonde hair framing her face. Something about the way she spoke made Lena want to lend a listening ear.

"I would love to, but... I'm working right now," Lena replied, her heart sinking a little as she saw the girl's eyebrows furrow. "I understand," the girl said, her disappointment evident.

Lena glanced back at Sam, who silently mouthed "go for it!" Lena took a deep breath and turned back to the girl, who was now looking at her with pleading eyes. Lena let out a sigh.

"Okay, I'll tell you what. I'm off in an hour, and I know a place we could go if you're willing to wait," Lena offered, hoping to bring back a smile to the girl's face.

The girl's smile returned, this time bigger than before, and Lena could see her eyes light up with excitement. "Yes! Please!" she exclaimed, grateful for the offer.

The waitress could feel eyes on her throughout her shift, but she intentionally avoided looking up at the blonde customer. She knew that if she did, she wouldn't be able to focus on her work.

As the hour came to an end, she took off her apron and grabbed her coat. "Sam! I'm off now," she called out, slipping on her coat. Her friend approached her, holding a brown bag in her hand.

"What's this?" Lena asked suspiciously as she accepted the bag. Sam grinned, thinking she was being clever. "Just something to snack on for you and your date," she replied playfully.
