There are noises all around me, a herd of people waving pride flags dash past Scar and I with large smiles coating their faces. They're giggling and playing amongst each other as they make their way through the crowds. There is a stage up ahead with tall drag queens, all donning extravagant makeup and outfits that could take no less than a few hours to put on, not to mention their voluminous wigs.
Although there are dozens of security surrounding the masses, no one seems to let it keep them from enjoying the time they have together. Their time to celebrate is not even spoiled by the aggravated protesters, shouting homophobic slurs and profanities. In fact, when I take a closer look I can only seem to laugh as I watch two young women makeout boldly in front of them, across from them there are also two much older men who seem to follow their lead and do the same to another group of bigots behind the fences.
"There's a lot going on, isn't there!" Scar lets out a loud unrestrained laugh beside me and I can't help but chuckle along with her.
"I think today is going to be a lot of fun," I feel my cheeks tug as a wide grin spreads over my face.
Yeah. Today's going to be a day to remember.
"So, where should we go first?"
Raven
"Pink or blue?" Lachy asks beside me, holding his hands out. I reach for the fluffy cloud-like treat in his right hand.
"I'll take pink," I smile down at him. "So, what do you want to do first? I heard there's a few carnival rides around here somewhere.""Yeah that sounds fun!" Lachy says with a chuckle, his free hand reaches up behind his head to scratch at his neck as his neck flushes a pale red. "I've never actually been to a carnival or festival like this before. Dad thought it'd be a good way for him to prove his support, we-" He sighs. "We didn't really see eye-to-eye about my sexuality at first."
I don't really know what I'm supposed to say, I haven't exactly told anybody about my sexual preferences till Buck. And that was obviously very different, I didn't have to worry about the threat of being disowned or thrown out of my own home by telling him. "Buck told me a little about it," looking down at him, I hope my face reveals everything I can't seem to say.
"It's ok, really."
"If you ever want somebody to talk to about any of this, I'm here." I hope that reassured him at least a little. I'm really bad at this whole 'comforting people' thing, especially when it comes to Lee. What was I thinking back in the first aid room? He was probably just as disturbed by my behaviour as I am.
Why did Lee have to come to mind at this second? My chest clenches uncomfortably and it must show on my face because Lachy looks up at me with concern coating his face.
"Are you ok?"
"Yeah, yeah I'm fine! Um, let's go fish for rubber ducks!" I wave him off along with the tightening feeling in my throat as I guide Lachy over to the carnival tent.
"Ok, so I'm shit at this," my words escape through my laughter as I hold the small rubber duck figurine in my hand, it can't be any bigger than the tip of my thumb.
"Clearly!" Lachy exclaims brightly, his face stuffed into the giant duck plush currently tucked by his side.
We walk away from the rubber duck tent with no real destination in mind. That is until I spot a haunted house.
I turn to my left with a glowing smirk, Lachy looks nervous as he glances up at me. "No, no I don't like that look on your face! What are you thinking? Do I even want to know?!"
