Chapter 51~ The Balcony

What if I could prove to you that it was Axcel.

I read Diego's text one hundred times.

Then I read it another hundred times.

Then I put my phone down, push back my chair and walk straight to my bedroom's balcony.

I grip the railings, and stare into the garden.

Isla's down there, playing with Rosa, with not one single care in the world.

I take a deep breath.

I wish I didn't care.

I wish I never cared about Diego, because then this would be so much easier. I could just blame the whole situation on him... because there's no way Axcel could be involved.

There's no way.

I lean further over my balcony, so I'm on my tip toes. Basically hanging off.

Diego wouldn't lie to me.

Would he?

Isla looks up and makes eye contact with me.

'Mummy!' She screams, as she waves at me.

I smile and wave back.

I step back from the edge.

Surely it can't hurt to see what Diego's got to say.

'Alexis.'

I take in a sharp breath and spin around.

Diego.

'What the fuck?' I say stepping forward. 'How did you get in here?'

I can feel my heartbeat get gradually faster.

He spins the ring on his index finger.

'I made a set of keys...' He pauses, clears his throat, and rubs the back of his neck. 'For emergencies.'

I stare at him.

'This is an emergency.' He continues.

I blink at him, and open my mouth to reply, but all that comes out is a whispered, 'What the fuck?'

'Alexis.' He steps forward.

I step back.

He stops, and his shoulders drop.

'What do you think happened that night?' He asks me softly.

The night he killed Seb?

The night Diego thinks Axcel killed Seb?

Why can't Seb come back and just tell me what happened?

'I think you killed Sebastian.' I say, my voice a little quieter than intended.

'Alexis... you can't be serious.' He says.

He looks at me, with so much emotion.

Emotion I didn't think he had.

He steps forward, 'I love you, I wouldn't lie to you.' He pauses. 'I swear to you it was Axcel.'

'You should leave.' I whisper.

'Alexis, please believe me. Come with me, and I'll show you the real CCTV.'

I shake my head.

What does he mean by the real CCTV footage?

'What do you mean?' I ask him.

'What...?' He says, looking confused.

'What do you mean the real CCTV?'

'There's two versions, Alexis. Ones cut, ones uncut.'

I stare at him.

'Diego, what does that mean?'

I feel like yelling.

Honestly... I feel like jumping off the edge of the balcony.

This is too much.

He takes my hand. 'I was in the garden that night, and so was Axcel. I don't know who has cameras on top of your back door, but they have the whole night recorded. They sent me the whole night version, the same day you showed me the version with only me in it... There's a cut and uncut version.'

I don't say anything.

So it was him in the video.

If I have the cut version then what's in the uncut version?

'Come with me.' Diego says more forcefully.

I pull my hand back. 'No.'

'Please.'

'No.' I say again. 'Axcel is Sebastian's brother. Why would he do that?'

'He-' He starts.

'Please leave.' I say, interrupting him.

He steps back.

'Okay, fine. Just... be careful Alexis.'

He walks away, and I press myself against the balcony railings.

'Mummy!' I hear Isla scream from below me.

I spin around.

Axcel is standing there, holding Isla.

He does not look happy.

She does.

She always does.

Then all of a sudden, a grin spreads over Axcel's face.

As he lifts his hand up and waves, my heart drops.

His gun is in his hand, pointing directly at Isla's head.

He steps to the side, revealing Rosa's body.

Blood pooling around her head.
