Winter Poetry Contest 2022- Third Entry

Topic: Chessboard

A square board divided into 64 smaller squares, half of which are light and half dark in colour, used for playing the game of chess or draughts.

Poem:

They were a pair of absolute opposites

One was an army soldier, other a doctor

First met at a hospital in the metropolis

They felt drawn to the aura of the other

On the chessboard, he was on black side

Didn't hesitate to destroy enemies' lives

For work, sorrow and guilt all put aside

Skilled at fighting with guns and knives

She was the white, the black's opponent

Her world consisted of saving each breath

Vowed to stay committed every moment

Can't let someone approach their death

Led to conflicts, they saw world differently

He fought, while she blossomed in serenity

His walk was rough while she trotted gently

Yet both in love with each other desperately

They crossed paths while working, often

Both observed the other but didn't talk

He felt sad too, his heart began to soften

Fond of his duty, also the feather like doc

Eventually she began to understand that

He had to fight for protecting their nation

Vigorous training everyday, brutal combat

Had to prioritize work over any occasion

It took some time to reach a compromise

But slowly they began to respect the other

Black guarded the land, sea and the skies

White continued to save those who suffer

They both were ever busy workaholics

Yet spent ample happy time together

Though tied in a life that lacked frolics

To happiness, both were getting closer
