Chapter 9: Have you heard of any mirror portal systems?

When Demi returned to the Monster High dimension, she had plans to hang out with Draculaura and her friends at the Coffin Bean. The Coffin Bean was close to the school and with her new Monster High Student ID that she used for her online classes, she could actually order stuff from there.
"So, what do you want from the Coffin Bean, Elissabat? Normally we order coffee and snacks before our big study nights. And the Monster High library is huge, so it wouldn't hurt to eat something before going in there.", Draculaura said, making sure that her friend, Elissabat, didn't feel left out.
"Maybe just a medium cup of cherry juice mixed with a bit of blood and one of Deuce's famous snake cupcakes.", Demi said.
"Good choice. Cherry juice is amazing and I'm so glad that one of my ghoulfriends is actually willing to try it.", Draculaura said, giving annoyed looks at Clawdeen and Frankie.
Draculaura then stepped up to the counter and ordered their food. Apparently Clawdeen had ordered a coffee and some kind of blue moon cookie, Frankie had ordered a coffee and slice of cake, and as expected, Draculaura had ordered a large cup of cherry juice without any blood in it for herself.
As they got their food and sat down, Clawdeen remarked, "Your eyes look different, ghoul. Are those new contacts?"
Demi shook her head, "The white eyelashes and the blue contacts were fake the whole time. I was wearing them as part of a costume for a play that I was in. This is my real eye color."
"Well, your eyes are bootiful, ghoul. And pink looks good with everything.", Draculaura said smiling at Elissabat, her pink eyes making eye contact with Elissabat's pink eyes. Despite how mysterious Elissabat was, she felt strangely familiar to Draculaura, as if she had known her in a past life. She couldn't figure where or when she knew her from. Her prescence was somehow familiar and comforting to her though, so she was happy to have her as a friend.
Clawdeen and Frankie nodded in agreement with Draculaura, and Demi couldn't help but smile back. They may not be the original versions of Draculaura and her friends that she was used to, but she had to admit that they were so much nicer and much more welcoming than anyone at Shadow High. She was starting to get used to them and she worried that she would feel guilty or forget them once she inevitably did the mirror ritual to get back to her original dimension.
She also couldn't tell her roommates and best friends at Shadow High, Lola and Eliza, because she felt like they would feel like she was betraying them, the way Ainsley had betrayed Rainbow High in a way by transferring to Shadow High.
"So, what do you need from the library for your monster hisstory project? Maybe I can help you find it. I'm at the top of my class, you know.", Draculaura said proudly.
"Just an old journal on portals and wormholes and stuff like that.", Demi said, trying to make it sound as vague as possible.
"Oh! We actually summoned my brother, Clawd from a portal! The ritual involved all these monster talismans. I still can't believe that I have an older brother, honestly! My mom is still stuck in another dimension though, so I have to figure out how to free her.", Clawdeen said, a bit of excitement in her voice.
"Then some monster that could duplicate itself showed up and we all had use our monster abilities to stop it! It was insane! You should've been there!", Frankie said excitedly, their body getting a jolt of electricity as they spoke.
Demi nodded and then sighed, "Thanks for trying to help, but that is not the portal that I have in mind. The one that I am doing my project on is much more ancient than that. It involves the use of mirrors and Monster Energy."
Draculaura and her friends went silent, and then Draculaura said in a hushed tone, "You mean the ancient, cursed, mirror portal system! Bloodgood says that it is off limits to students, as it has caused many mysterious disappearances over the years."
"I am just doing a report on it. Its not like I plan on reactivating it.", Demi said, acting while lying through her teeth.
Draculaura sighed, "Look. If you want information on it so bad, I know where the journal is. You will have to utilize your vampire powers to reach it though, as it is on a very high, secret shelf in the library. It is not even registered under the library's system, so most ghouls and mansters don't even know about it."
"Then how do you know about it?", Demi asked, curious.
"My dad told me about it. Apparently, he accidentally found it and read it when he was a student at Monster High. Its contents described countless other dimensions and how to find them in detail. He recalled some of the descriptions being so weird and foreign that they sounded absolutely unrealistic and gave him nightmares. It didn't have an author listed or a year listed though.", Draculaura said, her voice growing more serious.
The ghouls then took their leftover food and headed to Draculaura, Clawdeen, and Frankie's dorm, Draculaura casually sipping on her cherry juice as they walked. After dropping the food off at the dorm for Clawdeen and Frankie to finish, Draculaura and Demi headed for the school library.
The Monster High library was huge with very tall ceilings and full of intricate floor to ceiling bookshelves. Draculaura than began to walk toward a dark, older section of the library, gesturing for Demi to follow her. She then pointed upwards, at the very top shelf before turning into a bat.
Demi couldn't help but admire how cute Draculaura's bat form was. Her head where her hair would be even had the pink and black split dye that her hair had. She looked at her with her big pink eyes, waiting for Elissabat to transform into her bat form. As Demi transformed for the first time in decades, she could feel her arms turn into wings as well as every bone in her body shrinking, and before she knew it, she had transformed into a bat.
Draculaura then flew towards the highest shelf above them as Demi flew behind her. Once they got to the dark shelf, Draculaura pointed with her wing to an ancient looking, leather-bound journal wedged between two thick, ancient-looking, hardcover tomes. There was no title along the leather spine of the journal.
After Demi quickly grabbed it with her bat feet, they headed back down towards the floor. Once on the ground, they transformed back, Demi now clutching the journal in her hands. Demi then sat down at one of the big tables in the library and began to carefully flip through the journal. Where there would normally be a date and author written, it was completely blank, as if whatever name or date that would have been written there had never existed.
She carefully put it in her bag, and once Draculaura had finished checking out some library books that her and her friends needed for studying, they finally headed back to Draculaura and her friends' dorm room. After hanging out and studying together for a bit, Demi said goodbye to Draculaura and her friends and headed back to the attic.

When she went through the portal, Heather was waiting for her, doing homework or working on a presentation on her laptop per usual. "Did you get any new info?", Heather asked, briefly looking up at Demi, as Demi quickly removed the crystals from the portal.
"Someone wrote a whole journal about the mirror portal system. It was hidden on the top shelf of an older section of the Monster High school library. And Draculaura was right. Cherry juice from the Coffin Bean does taste good.", Demi said, showing Heather the journal.
"So Astronova wrote this in 2015?", Heather asked.
"When I looked through it in the Monster High dimension, the name and year were blank... Let me see that!", Demi said, as Heather showed her the first page in the journal.
Written there, clear as day, was Astronova's signature and the year 2015. Demi paled. "How? It was blank when I read it back in the Monster High library.", Demi said, confused.
"Maybe the magic in the Monster High Dimension was affecting the information in the journal. Maybe Bloodgood did something to keep it secret from the students, as you mentioned how many mysterious disappearances of Monster High students have happened because of how dangerous the Ancient Mirror Portal System was. I think that maybe the magic restricting the information is not active here.", Heather said.
Demi then flipped through the journal after Heather handed it back to her, and sure enough, the words on the pages had become much clearer and the diagrams and sketches showed more detail than when she had flipped through it back in the Monster High library.
"Who is this Astronova? Did you have any idea she had dimensional traveled to all these dimensions?", Heather asked.
"She was an Alien who began going to Monster High soon after MY Draculaura and her friends' big trip to Boo York, Boo York. I knew that she had been to the Ever After High Dimension, but I had no idea about her trips to the other, more hidden Dimensions.", Demi said, clearly surprised by the sheer amount of dimensional traveling that Astronova had done without anyone knowing or finding out about it.
"Thanks for pointing that out. I can see why the Twins admire your attention to detail so much.", Demi said, slipping the journal back into her bag to read in detail later.
"No problem.", Heather said, as they both headed back to their dorms for the night.

When Demi got to her dorm though, her roommates, Lola Wilde and Eliza McFee were waiting for her.
"What has been going on with you going to the attic for extended periods of time? Is there a secret society up there or something, because I can't help but notice how much you have been hanging out with Heather and those Storm Twins lately. I wouldn't be surprised if they were secretly cult leaders or something. Famous actors are weird like that, you know...", Lola asked.
"And where do you get your pink contacts? I have been looking on every cosplay website and I can never find contact lenses as pretty as those!", Eliza added.
Demi sighed, keeping her composure despite being nervous, "These are my real eyes. The blue eyes were just contact lenses the whole time. I thought that people would judge them for being freakish and unnatural looking, so I decided to hide them. And Lola, there is no cult in the attic. We are just working on a project for our film class up there. Do you realize how ridiculous you sound!?"
Eliza looked embarrassed, "Demi as your friends, we're sorry that you felt you had to hide your natural eye color like that. And its not as weird as you think, as Luna, and some of the other girls at our school and over at Rainbow High literally have purple eyes. You're lucky to have a unique eye color even, because in the sea of blue eyes in this world, yours really stand out."
"And I guess I did jump to conclusions with thinking you and the others were in a cult. You all share a film class. Its normal for you to work together on projects for it. Those Storm Twins can be quite secretive at times though, and sometimes I swear that despite their incredible charisma, that they're secretly up to no good...", Lola said, mostly saying the second part about the Twins to herself.
Demi couldn't help but smile as Eliza gently hugged her, "And I have all sorts of make-up ideas in mind to match your eyes, maybe some purple or darker pink eyeshadow with some darker purple lipstick like the kind Naomi wears..."
Lola then interrupted the conversation by putting one of her extra long, clawlike pink acrylic nails on Demi's shoulder. The feel of Lola's nails felt lighter and more fragile in comparison to Clawdeen's real, much sturdier, werewolf claws.
"I think that its getting late and that we all should get some rest for class tomorrow.", Lola said, as her and Eliza headed to their bedrooms to change into their pajamas. Demi then followed suit and went into her room to finally change into her pajamas and read the journal, deciding to keep its secret information between her, Heather, and the Twins and not tell Draculaura about Astronova or her extensionive history of dimensional travel.
