"Love's Unseen Foe"

There was a girl with a heart so pure,
But she was afraid of love, that's for sure.
She built up walls and kept them high,
So no one could hurt her, she couldn't try.

She longed for someone to hold her tight,
To tell her everything will be alright,
But the fear of rejection was too great,
So she kept her heart in a locked-up crate.

And there was a boy, kind and true,
But his heart was broken and battered too.
He couldn't let himself love again,
For fear of going through the same old pain.

He yearned for someone to call his own,
To share his life and to feel less alone.
But the fear of heartbreak held him back,
So he kept his emotions under a tight wrap.

They passed each other by every day,
Both too afraid to love or be loved in any way.
Until one day their eyes met and they knew,
Their hearts had found something new.

They spoke without words, with a silent plea,
"I see you, and you see me."
And slowly they took a chance,
Taking a step towards a sweet romance.

But the fear that once held them both apart,
Soon crept back in and tore at their hearts.
They couldn't shake the feeling of dread,
That the love they shared was doomed to end.

And though they tried with all their might,
To keep their love burning bright,
Their fear consumed them in the end,
And they said goodbye, as lovers, and as friends.

And so they walked away from what could've been,
Two hearts forever broken, and forever seen,
As the girl who was too afraid to be loved,
And the boy who was too afraid to love.
