"Promises in the Dark"

For awhile it felt exciting.
When you revealed what might be,
it was truly inviting.
Like a lantern's gentle glow,
it drew a harmless fly,
No wonder you tread upon vows, whispered a silent goodbye.

I envisioned love as a promise,
given so genuinely,
Though I yearned for one thing,
it unfolded differently.
You exist in one breath and disappear in the next,
Was your love for me sincere,
or just a fleeting plot?

Yet we lingered as friends,
was it a secret we sought?
Did you truly love me,
or was it just a role you thought?
How could you treat it like nothing, when 'I love you' was our nightly thought?

I sometimes wished we'd never been brought together,
But without you, my heart's guard wouldn't have been securely brought.
