Climbing up the plastic steps, Wednesday slid down her new toy. She has yet to stop playing with it for the past two hours, Larissa decided to leave her alone for a minute while she made them some lunch.
The door shut with a loud click making Wednesday lose her concentration, getting her foot caught between the rungs of the plastic slide. She fell forward onto the flat part, but her leg was stuck, making the slide flip over top of her, bumping her on the head. Wednesday sat there for a moment, trying to comprehend what happened, before Larissa barged through the door a minute later.
Weems' jaw dropped as she took in the sight of her daughter squirming on the floor, trapped under the slide. She rushed over to her, untangling her leg from the rungs and flipping the slide back over.
"Wednesday! Are you all right?" She scooped up the little, holding her against her chest and cradling the back of her head. Wednesday nodded, wriggling in her caregivers arms. Trying to take her mind off it, Larissa asked, "Are you hungry, sweetie?"
"Ja." Wednesday muttered, rubbing her eyes. Raising an eyebrow, Weems glanced down at the girl. She assumed that the accident had made her drop into a younger headspace, so she thought nothing of it and carried her to the kitchen.
"Ich möchte Schokolade."
The headmistress put her down in the highchair before staring at her daughter, "Can you say that again?"
"Ich möchte Schokolade." Wednesday repeated, smacking the top of the tray. "Bitte?" She looked at the woman with wide, hopeful eyes.
"Are you sure you are okay?" Weems stood up, taking a seat in front of Wednesday. Taking her hand, she felt around the goth's head, finding a small bump. "Oh no, darling, why didn't you tell Mama you got hurt?"
Wednesday turned her head sideways trying to move away from the woman's hand. "Nicht anfassen." She levelled her stare, making Larissa pull her hand back.
Mumbling under her breath, Larissa stood up to grab her phone from the counter. "Who do I even call? A doctor or a linguist?"
"Hungrig, Mama." Wednesday sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. Picking up her daughter, Weems held the little on her hip as she grabbed her phone.
"Repeat that, darling?"
"Ich bin hungrig, Mama!" Larissa's translation app told her that Wednesday was hungry, a relief for the older woman.
"Oh, you're hungry? That I can help with." Weems carried her daughter to the kitchen, setting her down in her high chair. She decided not to stress too much over Wednesday's apparent language switch, since she seemed to at least understand what her mother was saying.
"You want a sandwich? Or maybe some fruit?"
"Ja! Ich möchte ein Frucht-Smoothie! "Mit Bananen, Äpfel und Erdbeeren." The little one pointed at the fruit bowl. Weems picked up an apple.
"This?"
"Ja."
One by one, Larissa held up different fruits until her little had the desired ones.
Taking the ingredients, she dumped everything into the blender. The motor noise was loud, making Wednesday cover her ears with her hands. After a minute, the smoothie was ready and she put some in a wide mouth water bottle. She put the rest into a cup for herself.
"Here you go, sweetie. Be careful okay?" Wednesday nodded excitedly. "What do you say?"
"Danke!" She put the bottle to her mouth and took a large gulp, "Das ist gut!" She turned the bottle up again.
