Chapter 20 | match

It wasn't often the kami wandered the human realm. It was really only you and L that did because you still had loved ones down there. But today Hypnos had quite the revelation for you, so he swaddled up his godling and it was down to Japan he went.

He hasn't been in Japan for centuries, it looked so much different. It was a nice surprise when he showed up on the balcony dropped off by his brother. Thanatos was the one who could fly, Hypnos couldn't after loosing his wing, only hover.

Just as you and L had been suspecting, Morpheus had clear signs of developing his power over dreams and they were becoming more and more prophetic. Which gave Hypnos the idea to have him see if he could recognise any of the suspects you had from his dreams.

So sat before the computers you all crowded around the screens. Morpheus sat in his fathers lap watching the profiles of the suspects go by looking for someone he recognised. At first, there was no hit. But after a few pages of scrolling, he perked up.

"That one! That's the man with the briefcase!" He said, pointing to the picture on the screen.

You and L perked up too, that was exactly who you'd been looking into recently. Treu Mikami.

"Hyp he's definitely having prophetic dreams. That's exactly the guy we've been looking into" you said.

"I knew it! Look at you go Morphie, you'll be as powerful as your grandma Nyx one day" Hypnos smiled.

The fact Morpheus was seeing Mikami in his dreams and you and L had literally just started looking into him as a suspect was no coincidence. You'd call it fate if you didn't have the confirmation already that the fates weren't involved.

L looked turned to the successors across the room who were taking a break from work for some lunch.

"Matt have a you had the chance to get information on Mikami yet?" He asked.

"No fucking way, is that the guy?" He replied.

"Sure seems like it, you're sure that's the man in your dreams?" Hypnos asked his son.

"Uh-huh. He even has the glasses" the godling confirmed.

Matt was immediately over at his desk, bringing his noodles with him of course. He pulled up what he had so far, sending a copy to L's computer.

"I still need to get more information but here's what I got so far" he said.

"Thanks" L replied.

Now intrigued the successors stopped to watch as well, and you and L scanned through everything you had on the suspect so far.

Teru Mikami, aged 35 born in 1982. Worked as ironically a criminal prosecutor and resides in Osaka. Deceased mother and seemingly no contact with father, he was class president in school and was known to get into altercations while standing up to bullies. Was raised by his single mother and was incredibly close to her before she died in a car accident, which according to those around him he never truly recovered from. He was described as obsessive and strict, almost compulsive with his routines and has a very black and white way of thinking.

Definitely someone who would fit the Kira bill. And if Morpheus could match his face to the man with the death note in his dreams it seems real likely this was the guy.

"Definitely seems like it huh?" Hypnos muttered.

"It's gotta be him, or at least he knows something" L replied.

"Honey if you have any more dreams about this man, you tell me straight away alright?"

Morpheus nodded, yawning and resting his head sleepily against his fathers chest.

"We've got an advantage over this guy, we already know about the death notes existence AND you guys are bunch of gods. There's no way he'll get away, it's just a matter of finding out where this guy is and where he keeps the death note" Mello commented.

"Not to mention who the shinigami attached to the book is. I can't imagine it'd be Rem... she's not that stupid" Near added.

"It could be Ryuk, but I have the feeling it's not. He caused the last situation and the alliance of death has kept a real close eye on him since. We'd know if he was the one behind it" you muttered.

Who was this shinigami that dropped the book? How long had the book been in circulation before it was found? You had a lot of questions about that stupid book. What made this case different was the goal of the killer. With light it was to become a god, with Mikami it was to please a 'god'. He could be just as dangerous though, if he was willing to kill for his 'god' he could easily kill innocent people who tried to stop him.

"I'll try track this guys address down, then we can start watching him in person" Matt said, sliding back over to his desk to get to work.

"I assume you'll be working the field Mells?" Near asked.

"Yep, just get me the location and I'll stalk this guy for evidence" Mello replied.

It was decided, Teru Mikami was now the prime suspect. And this case may just have gotten a whole lot easier if Morpheus kept having prophetic dreams.

"Good luck, you guys be careful ok? You three aren't immortal" Hypnos said.

"We'll be careful, don't worry. L taught us well" Near said.

L cracked a smile, he couldn't help but be proud of them even with the worry for their safety in the back of his mind.

"Don't get hurt, he looks scary" Morpheus said.

"We'll be alright kiddo, we've done cases like this before. Plus we've got your dad to help us too" you assured the child.

"Dada is super strong, he protects me good. He can protect you too"

Hypnos chuckled, he was build like a twig but was extremely magically powerful. He was the grandchild of primordial chaos themselves after all. So he may not be about to pack a punch but he could definitely help with the magic stuff.

"No one hurts my little daydream. Or any of my friends" he smiled, giving his son a gentle squeeze hug.

They were so cute, reminded you so much of L and the successors when they were Morpheus' age.

"Tell your brother and the death gods we're onto a suspect, I'm sure they'll be relieved" L said.

"Oh they definitely will, I'll be your psychopomp for this message. May not be as fast as Hermes but the message will get there eventually" Hypnos replied.

Looks like all that hard work searching for a suspect has finally paid off, you were finally onto someone here. There was no doubt in your mind that Teru Mikami was the resurrected Kira.
