Chapter 37 | uneasy

It wasn't often a sleep deity woke up suddenly in a cold sweat. Most of time they would fade in and out of sleep nice and calm, but Morpheus had awoken suddenly and immediately crawled out of bed to tell his father what he saw.

"Dada! Dada!" He said, scrambling into the poppy garden Hypnos was currently tending to.

The slight alarm in his voice made Hypnos drop everything and turn to scoop up his son.

"What's wrong daydream? What happened?" He asked.

"I saw the man again, in my dream. The Kira guy" Morpheus said.

Yet another prophetic dream, they were becoming more and more common now as the godlings power developed and he and his father had been practicing with dream work.

"What was he doing?" Hypnos asked.

"He was at a Tori gate, and he was talking to someone. But I couldn't see anyone, it was like he was talking to the air" Morpheus explained.

A Tori gate? Was he at a shrine? What would he be doing there if he found Kira as his god and not one of the Shinto gods? Then again, shrines were just a part of Japanese culture. Although Hypnos didn't recall any upcoming events in the next few months that'd take place at a shrine.

"Was he prying? Or maybe leaving an offering to someone?" Hypnos asked.

"I don't know, I couldn't understand him. But he was standing under a tori gate and talking down at the ground. He looked a bit messy" Morpheus replied.

So at some point in there near future Mikami would end up under a Tori gate at a shrine, talking to the ground. Interesting. Perhaps he should ask the Japanese pantheon what that could mean, if it was alarming in any way.

"Hmm... best tell (y/n) and L. They'd be asleep down in the human realm by now, we can visit them in dream" Hypnos said.

After taking a moment to clear up all the gardening supplies he'd pulled out to tend to his poppies, Hypnos and Morpheus crawled back into bed and put themselves under the blanket of slumber once more. The domain of sleep and dreams would take the form of whatever they wanted, or whatever dream of a mortal they were watching and morphing. It always started out as a starry void, and would shape and change as the dream formed. Hypnos had a default landscape he'd made whenever he had to pull someone into his domain, which was a simple field of poppies by the river Lethe with some ambrosia trees scattered about. And that's where you woke up.

Well... dream woke up. Your physical body was still asleep in taskforce hq. Your vision cleared as you opened your eyes and became aware of your surroundings, you could still feel L's arms wrapped around you but the bed you lay in now felt like grass and flowers. You knew where you were when you looked around, you'd been pulled into a dream before. Giving L a gentle shake, he too woke up.

"Hun, we're dreaming" you said, coaxing him to rise.

He sat up, rubbed his eyes and took a moment to realise what was going on as the world around the two of you started to take shape.

"Hm? Hypnos must want something of us" L replied.

You took his hand and pulled him to his feet, the two of you standing and waiting for the world to form. It didn't take long, and soon enough it was a crowd of poppies as far as the eye could see and Hypnos with his son held up on his hip faded into existence before you.

"What's up? If you're pulling us into your domain it must be something serious" you asked.

"Another prophetic dream" Hypnos replied.

You and L gave each other a glance. Slightly worried, slightly exited. This could be the sign you needed to decide on the next step.

"You're getting them more and more aren't you Morphie?" You said.

"Tell them what you saw sweetest..." Hypnos told Morpheus.

"The Kira guy was standing under a tori gate talking to the ground. It was in a forest or something, lots of trees. He also looked messy" Morpheus explained.

Again, you and L exchanged looks. But this time it was one of confusion.

"Like a shrine? What's he doing at a shrine, there's no Kira shrine and I doubt he'd put one of the gods over Kira" L pondered.

"Weird, maybe it's just for an event like a festival or something?" You asked. 

"There aren't any for another few months, it seems out of character for him to just go to shines for the fun of it too"

"When you say messy...?" You asked the godling.

"Like he's been sleeping and didn't brush his hair or get changed to day clothes. He was dis- disev-" Morpheus explained.

"Disheveled" Hypnos corrected, to the confirmation of his son.

So your culprit would be at a shrine in a forested area talking to the ground in a disheveled state sometime in the near future... what the hell is that all about? L pondered on it for a moment, the detective gears working in his brain as he considered the possibilities.

"If he's disheveled that could mean it's after he realised the book is gone and he's run out of spare pages. He'd definitely get panicked and angry, which could lead to him lashing out at himself or others and becoming disheveled" L said.

"Maybe... why'd he go go a shrine though? He's a Kira worshipper not a Shinto practitioner?" You questioned.

"I... don't know, but we can definitely keep tabs on the nearest shines. There's a ton in Osaka, but within the area he lives there's only 3. Unless he makes the effort to go further away to a different one..."

Maybe he goes to one in a move of desperation that a god, any god would hear him. Or maybe he's so deluded with his belief in Kira he genuinely thinks Kira is part of the Shinto pantheon or something? You had no idea yet, but you'd definitely be keeping an eye on the nearby shrines.
