This was the next big step in the case, you'd been watching the suspect for a while now and you had the grounds to question him. Although you had to be careful, you didn't want him knowing that you were onto him. So you figured the best way to go about it was to question him under the guise of 'investigating the justice of Kira website and it's members for cult like behaviours'.

The justice of Kira was one of the most well known pro-Kira websites, and at this point you'd call it a whole ideology. Millions were members of the site, including Mikami. So you could use it as an excuse to have him questioned on Kira related issues. As discussed, Mello was the one doing the field work but for a proper questioning he needed someone to record everything. So Matt was joining him in the interrogation room.

But it wasn't just getting information out of him that was the goal here. It was seeing the shinigami, as gods yourselves you and L could see it without touching the book.

On the other side of a false wall that was actually one way glass, you, L and Near sat and watched. This was the first time you'd seen the suspect in person, and he gave you an odd feeling. But he entered the room in a professional manner, shaking the hands of Matt and Mello, and exchanging business cards as was usual in Japan.

The goal of Matt and Mello's interrogation was to trick him into giving up something you could use without revealing he was a suspect. L had trained then very well, and despite how rowdy and jokey they could be off duty they were excellent investigators when on the clock. So you sat at the glass, and watched. Listening in via the wiretaps in the room.

"Basically what we're doing here is finding as many members of the website as we can to gather information about a certain group that are displaying some alarming cult like behaviours. This isn't about being pro or anti Kira, it's merely trying to prevent a tragedy from happing. I'm sure you remember when those gas attacks happened back in 95..." Mello began.

"Ah, yes I remember that. It was all over the news at the time. I understand where you're coming from, some people are using the Kira name for their own ideology, which can inevitably lead to something dangerous like that" Mikami replied.

L watched intently, he was always very interested in the way his successors took his teachings and used them in real cases. They each had their own way of using them, it made him proud.

"Using the subway attacks as a comparison... good thinking Mells..." he muttered.

"Perfect compassion too, that was perpetrated by a cult..." you added.

Matt let Mello take the lead, he was mainly there to document everything as was usual in interrogations.

"A few months ago we got a tip about members of the site using the private chat rooms to discuss various ways of eliminating large numbers of people in the name of Kira. We believe we have some suspects, but at this point we want to cover all our bases you know? So we're trying to get as much information about the site and the culture around it as possible. You're fairly active on the public boards, so you'd be pretty in the know about the culture of the site yes?" Mello explained.

"I'd say so yes, it definitely has its own set of unwritten rules. I wouldn't say anything too outlandish, mainly keeping things civil and such. But there is definitely a culture" Mikami replied.

"Yeah that's what most people we've talked to have said. That it's kind of like when you act a certain way around certain friend groups to fit in"

"Yes it's like that. Not too alarming, just naturally wanting to fit in. I can't say what goes on in the private chats that I'm not part of, but most of the people I've talked to keep that same level of respect from the public boards"

What Mello was trying to do here was establish some rapport. Making sure Mikami felt as if he wasn't in trouble and that he could be honest about things. That he and Matt were merely looking into some dangerous behaviours on the website rather than singling him out as a potential Kira. No doubt Mikami would walk away from this thinking he'd swindled the police and got away with his crimes, hiding his identity as Kira.

Little did he know they already knew.

"They're doing well, I'll give them that. As boring as the establishing connection part can be at times" Near said.

"They definitely are, I'm always so proud of you guys when I get to see you in action" L said.

"Ugh dad- you're such a sap"

You snickered, even way pass the edgy teenager phases they still jokingly scoffed at affection as all kids did with their parents.

"You guys are our babies of course we're saps" you teased, ruffling their long hair.

"You just wanted an excuse to touch my hair" Near replied.

"What? No. As long and soft as it is..."

Maybe you liked playing with their hair, it was so flowy and pretty...

As Matt and Mello continued their interrogation, keeping the vibe casual and somewhat friendly, they were completely unaware of the large figure that had finally decided to show up. The shinigami was here.

You and L perked up, looking up at the tall figure. It was mostly white, had long stick like arms and an almost beak looking mouth. Morpheus was right when he said it was shaped a little like a Teru Teru Bozu.

"Shinigami?" Near asked.

"Yep, it's... kind of like a classic sheet ghost but with these stick arms and a weird beak looking thing" you explained.

"I can't even picture that..."

Watching the shinigami, it seemed bored and uninterested. Not as perceptive as Ryuk was, or they'd have probably figured out that Matt and Mello carried a boon from a kami just from the energy they gave off. Although it did look them up and down, as if it was judging their fashion choices or something.

"You ever seen that one before?" L asked.

"Nope, never met the guy. Then again I don't interact with shinigami often, love gods don't really cross path with death ones" you replied.

"Hmm, we need this guys name. Maybe we can figure out the details of how and when the death note was dropped if we knew who the shinigami was"

"Good idea, I'll ask one of the death kami for records"

The shinigami didn't stay long, clearly bored and not finding any use in listening to the interrogation. It walked out, through the wall and probably off to people watch the officers in the other rooms of the police station you were borrowing for this.

"Confirmed? The same one Morpheus was dreaming about?" Near asked.

"I'd say so, that godling could be the key to solving this case at this rate" L replied.

You picked up a nearby sheet of paper, drawing out a rough sketch of what the shinigami looked like to show Matt and Mello when they were done. Near looked over your shoulder, not sure how to feel about the strange looking shinigami. It was definitely different to Rem and Ryuk that's for sure.

"Looks kind of like a bowling pin..." they muttered.

It kind of did actually...
