"Alright fuckers listen up"
L instinctively did the dad point toward Mello, even though he was an adult now.
"Language" he said.
"Sorry" Mello replied, instinctively.
You snickered. Even all grown up and allowed to swear the two of them would still act in instinct around such language.
"Here's everything I gathered on the guy. He's a total workaholic, very very strict on schedules and routines. Every day this whole week he's done the same routine at the same time. Wake up, get ready, be at work by 7am and leave by 3pm. Go to the gym for about an hour and head home. Only exception to the rule is at the end of the week he goes grocery shopping after the gym, then heads home. Which means he must be using the controlling time of death method, writing everything out in advance rather than killing on the hour every hour" Mello explained.
"I figured he'd probably be using that methods... you think we'll have to bug his house like we did Light?" Near replied.
"Definitely, I can only see so much through the slight gap in the curtains"
You needed to know exactly were he kept the death note, no doubt he'd have it hidden. Or if Morpheus' dreams meant anything maybe he keeps it on him at all times like in his briefcase. So it seems getting cameras in his house would be the way to go. Given his strict schedule, getting in and out while he's away would be easy. This little meeting shouldn't take too long, everyone could get back to work soon. But in truth you liked these little meetings, it was nice having the whole family sat around the table and chatting. Even if the subject matter was a little morbid.
Near was very cute today, wearing a long white dress with frills at the trims. A vaguely lolita style, something Misa suggested. Matt as usual had a console right next to him, having reluctantly put it down to pay attention to the case. Mello looked tired form the busy week, taking after L with the eyebags. But somehow he still found the energy to get all punked up with a banger outfit.
And rather out of place were you and L, winged and robed as if you weren't sitting in the human realm with a bunch of other humans. You loved your weird little family of orphans.
"Alright, sounds like a plan. Mello you can handle that I assume?" L replied.
"Leave it to me I'll get in there and place everything, Matt can hook everything up so we can view a live feed" Mello said.
"Can do bro, easy peasy" Matt added.
All this past week Mello had been tailing Mikami and noting everything about him, so far he found nothing outright incriminating but definitely suspicious. None of you would call the strict routine itself suspicious, that was usually just a harmless symptom of something like autism or ADHD. But it was secrecy and reclusive life he lead that added onto the routine which made things look a little odd.
Not only did you have some Devine help though the god of dreams, but some tangible real world suspiciousness as well.
"What about shinigami? I known you guys can't see them without touching the book but did you see anything moving or something?" You asked.
"Actually yes, when he's alone and thinks no one can see or hear him. Occasionally he'll talk to someone I can't see. Seems like he doesn't really care for the shinigami, he just treats it like it's a shadow following him or something. No love, no hate, just tolerating" Mello replied.
"Any names?"
"Not that I heard. Although the guy has taste I saw it eat chocolate"
Hmm, a chocolate eating shinigami. You didn't know of any that preferred chocolate over apples. Then again you weren't too connected with the shinigami as it was.
"I don't know who that could be... (y/n)?" L muttered.
"Nope. If we see the other gods soon, ask them" you replied.
Mikami was definitely the copycat Kira, it was becoming more and more obvious and there was more and more evidence slowly building up. And yet, even with all the progress you still couldn't shake off that feeling something was wrong about all this...
Your intuition as a god was good, all gods had good intuition. But you'd never felt the nagging gut feeling like this before. It was like there was something hidden in plain sight you just couldn't get your finger on, like when you're trying to remember a word and it's on he tip of your tongue.
L being L, quickly noticed your look of unease and spoke up.
"Honey you've got that look again, what's wrong?" He asked.
"I just... I dunno. I feel like we're missing something here, like there's something off about all this" you replied.
"I mean, I get the unease in a case like this. But I can't think of anything it'd be..."
You'd asked the death alliance, L didn't know, the successors definitely wouldn't... maybe you were just being paranoid? Although you didn't want to discredit your gods intuition.
"Hmm... maybe I'll ask Hypnos... or Aph" you muttered.
"The fates aren't involved are they?" Near asked.
"No, Than checked with them when this all started. It's all purely chance" L replied.
"That's... ugh. Sometimes the universe just really likes to make things difficult huh?"
"Tell me about it"
L was still pretty ticked off about this case. Even this far into it, he just wanted things to go back to normal. He put Light away and Misa served her time in the library of life organising life logs as her atonement for her acts as the second Kira. It was meant to all be over after that, and he'd just focus on his family, his devotees and having a nice cosy life with you.
But of course, the universe had to throw L a curveball again. He couldn't catch a break, in all his last lives and now it seemed.
"Alright, let's set things up on Monday and watch the live feed over next week. Surely we'll be able to catch something" L sighed.
"Done deal, leave the field work to me again" Mello replied.
Little netting about the current state of the case over, everyone got back to work. You rolled your office chair over to L's and placed a kiss on his cheek, resting your head on his shoulder.
"Don't look so sad, I know this is stressful but we're gods Damnit. We'll be alright, everything will work out" you assured.
He sighed, placing a kiss on your forehead and wrapping an arm around you as he worked.
"I wish I had your optimism, love" he replied.
"You're always such a pessimistic downer, and for what? Things worked out last time, I know they'll work out again" you replied.
"If I wasn't the pessimistic one, we wouldn't have they Yin Yang balance we do. It's part of what makes us fit together so well"
He had a point, you weren't quite opposites, but you had your balance that worked out just right for you. You were the sun, he was the moon, and it was meant to be that way.
