To most peoples surprise, Hizashi was a morning person. It was 9 am on a Saturday and he had already been up for a couple of hours. Normally he would try to sleep in a little longer, considering he had to get up at 5.30 each morning to get to the daycare in time. Today, however, he had woken up after coming up with a song idea in his sleep. He had immediately scribbled it down in the little notebook he always had on his night stand for exactly this purpose.

He wasn't going into the studio until noon so he had some free time before that. However, Hizashi hadn't been able to concentrate on anything other than what had happened with Shouta earlier. Maybe he had only imagined it but it felt like there had been something between them in that moment.

A sigh escaped his lips as he flopped down on the bed, waking up the kitten who had been sleeping on his pillow. What was wrong with him? Why couldn't he stop thinking about it? Was he really starting to catch feelings for Shouta again? Or had they never really gone away?

No, he couldn't let himself think like that. Shouta had made it pretty clear how he felt about Hizashi. Shouta had moved on a long time ago.

Besides, this entire arrangement they had going on wasn't about them. It was about Eri getting to know her father and Hizashi getting to know his daughter. Hizashi shouldn't let his stupid feelings get in the way of that. He had already fucked up with Shouta one time, he wasn't about to risk it all over again.

The doorbell rang unexpectedly, scaring Macchiato who had just fallen back asleep on the bed. Hizashi saw her disappear under the bed before he went over to see who was at the door. He wasn't really expecting anyone and the list of potential people it could be was pretty short.

Outside the door stood a middle aged woman with long blond hair and bright green eyes. Her whole face cracked into a smile when she saw Hizashi.

"Mom?" Hizashi said in surprise as he was enveloped in a tight hug.

"Oh, it's so good to finally see you again! My baby is finally home." Hizashi's mom pulled back from the hug. She put her hands on Hizashi's cheeks to get a good look at him. "Look at you, all grown up."

It had been a long time since he'd seen his mom, longer than he would've wished, but it wasn't exactly easy to fly home when you were a poor student living on to other side of the pacific. He had grown a few inches since the last time he saw her, and so had his hair which was now almost down to his shoulders.

"It's good to see you too, mom. I had no idea you were coming."

"Well I had to come visit my baby when he finally came home after four years!" Hizashi's mom said. She put down the big purse she always carried and pulled out a few food containers. "And I brought some food. After all that American garbage you have been fed the last years, I figured you needed some real home-cooked japanese meals."

Hizashi laughed as he was handed four full containers. "Thanks, mum." He carefully put them on the kitchen counter to put in the fridge later. It would probably take some reorganisation to fit them all in the tiny fridge but that was a problem for the future.

A faint meow was coming from under the bed as Macchiato poked her head out. Curiosity had apparently defeated her fear of strangers.

"And you must be Macchiato," Hizashi's mom sat down on the floor beside the bed, putting her hand out for the cat to smell. Macchiato seemed sceptical at first as the kitten took a few trying sniffs of the stranger. However, she quickly decided she liked Hizashi's mom, letting her scratch her behind the ear.
