A/N: So it's been... three months? 😅 Jokes aside, I'm extremely sorry for the lack of updates. At first, it was just a lack of motivation. Then I was busy studying for my exam. But most recently, almost a month ago, my house caught fire. I'm not going to bother going into detail about it, but if you'd like to know, I posted some minor details about it on my community tab. All I'll say is that ever since, my life has been flipped upside down. I barely have any free time anymore to relax, let alone write. I didn't get to take my exam because of the situation, and I'm not longer going to college at the moment, but fingers crossed I will be in September.

Anyway, before the fire, I'd made a plan that starts today to update both my ongoing books once every two weeks. So today, it's The Long Ride. Next Monday, it will be An Agent's Path, if that makes sense? If any of you here are reading An Agent's Path, I'm say... 65% done with the chapter and will have it out next Monday as scheduled. I'm trying to juggle this for you guys, as with everything that's happened, these books are some of the only things that have stayed the same. And, I really don't want to let you guys down.

That's all I wanted to say. Again I am extremely sorry for the lack of updates, I'll try to get better and stick to this new update schedule. Until next week, enjoy this chapter! (It's unedited, sorry 🫤)

"You must do everything in your power to stop the Great Devourer. Go, ninja! Go!" I'm disconnected from my fear stricken trance as Sensei's words reach my ears. His tone is once again, surprisingly calm. Especially in this current situation. Urging us with his unwavering faith.

"No! Sensei..."

I understand now.

The person who turned me into who I am today and for the first time in my life made me feel like I accomplished something great, is about to be gone forever.

A single tear rolls down my cheek.

And then, a serpent breaks through the stone ground. Dark green scales cover it's entire body. Two large fangs protruding from the top of it's mouth. The beast circles as it rises up high into the air, disclosing the sheer, unfathomable scale of it.

Oh crap.

✧✧✧✧✧

I take several steps back, avoiding small rocks that land close by from the destruction, hiding in the crevis of a doorway the others and I had come through. An ear-deafening, terrifying roar rips from the Devourer's throat, and a shiver racks throughout my spine. The Devourer lets out a louder roar, seemingly growing bigger as it continues to rise from the pit it was once trapped in. Soon, the beast dives back down to the ground, large fangs visible from its mouth open wide. The five of us watch in terror as it roars even louder and quickly clamps down on the spot of land Sensei's stood upon.

A shaky hand covers my agape mouth. Eyes fixated on the sole spot. Seeing that... It's horrendous. A sick feeling curdles in my stomach. My eyes are watery and my vision is all blurred, but I can still see so it doesn't register in my mind just yet. He... He's really gone. Sensei's really gone. I haven't known him too long. A few months at best. But it feels like a million pieces of my heart are missing. You don't need to know someone long to have a connection with them. Before, I didn't believe those words. But now? Now...I understand them.

"Sensei!"

"No!"

Another ear-deafening roar rips from the Devourer's throat before the beast looks around the city. Unmoving from it's position as though it wants to find something before heading wherever. It barely takes a minute for it to set it's glowing magenta eyes on us. I feel myself shrink underneath its gaze as it stares the five of us down. It just ate Sensei and... we may be next.
