Bird Catcher

I am in a monitored room waiting for my lawyer. The lawyer, I predict will probably be some fresh faced kid straight out of law school

You got what money could get you

Which was why I assumed legal aid was on the way

I had told the policewoman who had taken my statement that I didn't want a lawyer, that I would go straight to trial and confess just like I had to the man in the police car who instructed me to save my confession for my statement

The police officer had seemed to pity me; I did not want her to pity me I just wanted her to respect my decision of not wanting a lawyer.

Without any legal representation, I probably would be given the longest sentence where I was more likely to die first than get out

And I didn't want to get out

''Sir, seeing that you are looking at charges in two different states, if you don't get a lawyer this is going to be one heck of a long and messy process'' is what she had said

Which led me to how I had agreed to a lawyer after all

My lawyer as I have been told would be led into the room as soon as I was seated

It has been at least 20 minutes now and my lawyer has still not made an appearance. The guard who had escorted me into the room and fastened my handcuffs to the silver bar on the table before moving onto my feet had informed me that I was to wait for her

By the time the lawyer walks in my head is bent over held up by my hands, my hair that was in dire need of a haircut formed sort of a curtain shielding my view

She has heels on, I could tell by the clicking sound that reverberated throughout the empty room.

I hear the chair being dragged across the ground before she sits down

''hello Mr Thompson'' she greets

Still I do not look up

I get a whiff of her perfume; it smells like the kind of perfume you would pay a fortune for, just for a tiny miniature bottle

Based purely off the perfume I want to assume she is not legal aid, just because I don't think she would be raking in the amount of bucks one would need to comfortably be spending money on thousand dollar bottles of perfume

But I'm not paying for a private attorney, so it must just be legal aid with money to waste

''What the fuck have you gotten yourself into'' She says, followed by a sigh

Excuse me?

This causes my head to jerk upright and to look at her straight in the eye

I was right it was not legal aid

Instead its Cassie

Befuddled as to why my sister is here in Idaho let alone sitting in front of me ''what are you doing here?'' I ask her

''Nice to see you too Will'' she responds flashing me a smile

''What are you doing here?'' I repeat, lowering my voice a bit

''I'm your lawyer'' she states, lifting the briefcase at her side before setting it down onto the table next to her and pulling out a couple of papers

Cassie holds the papers upright and knocks them on the table so that the papers can be aligned perfectly behind each other before setting the papers down and skimming over the contents
