"Okay, but can you just..."

The man sighed and put his hand over his face.

He breathed in deeply.

"Listen, fellow. Can't we cut some kind of deal?"

It was late afternoon and the whole family was home.

Cliff, who was sitting next to Bobby on the living room rug, looked away from the cartoon they were both watching.

He watched his father, who was leaning against the kitchen sink with the phone next to him, put a hand to his forehead and sigh.

Then he put the phone receiver down.

Cliff's mom walked beside him and crossed her arms.

"He said 'no' huh, Roy?"

"Don't start."

"Did I say anything?"

"No, but you were about to."

She pursed her lips.

Cliff looked away from them and went back to watching the cartoon.

"So what now?" she asked him.

"The two of us need to go over there. Try to convince him otherwise."

"I'll call Monica—"

"Oh, no. Frances. Cliff's twelve, he can look after Bobby himself."

"Is that the best idea?"

"You don't trust that I know best?"

"Do you want the truth?"

Roy rolled his eyes.

"Cliff!" he yelled.

Cliff turned around.

"Yeah, Dad?"

"Come here."

Cliff groaned.

"Aw, Dad, come on!" He gestured toward the television. "I'm gonna miss this part."

"Just get over here!" Roy said, tense.

Startled, Cliff immediately walked over to where his parents were.

Frances ruffled his hair a bit to calm his fears from his dad's angry outburst.

"Listen, son. Your mom and I have some...business that we need to attend to. So we're leaving you and Bobby here for the next hour or so. It's about time you learned some responsibility."

"You'd know all about that, wouldn't you Roy?"

Roy stayed silent to his wife's cutting words.

Frances gently put her hands on Cliff's shoulders.

"You know the rules, Clifford. No messes, stay inside, and whatever you do, do not, under any circumstances, invite anyone else here while we're gone—"

Cliff opened the door twenty minutes later to find Jack grinning at him, Liam looking unnervingly calm, and Keegan looking like a frightened baby deer.

Jack rushed through the door, with Keegan and Liam following behind him.

Cliff closed the door behind them.

Jack walked over to the television to find Bobby sitting cross-legged on the floor, staring at a cartoon on the television with his mouth hanging open in awe.
