APRIL

As we got into the car, Logan started making conversation with me, but in his teasing and arrogant manner.

"So, how are you liking this place so far?" he asked, smirking.

I rolled my eyes, "It's fine. It's better than being stuck at home with you all day."

He laughed, "Ouch, that hurts. But don't worry, I'll make sure to make your time here more enjoyable."

I raised an eyebrow, "Oh, I have no doubt about that. You're the master of making everything enjoyable for yourself."

He chuckled, "And for you too, apparently."

I couldn't help but smile, I know I shouldn't be enjoying this, but I am.

Just then, my phone beeped, interrupting our conversation.

It's a text from my dad.

𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐨. 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐝. 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨𝐨.

I text him back right away. I miss my dad and my friends.

"How does it feel to be the new kid in school?" he asked with a smirk still driving.

I rolled my eyes, "Oh, it's just great. I love being stared at by everyone and having no idea where anything is."

He chuckled, "Well, if you need any help, I'll be happy to show you around."

I raised an eyebrow, "Oh, so you're offering to be my tour guide now? How generous." I said sarcastically.

He shrugged, "Just trying to be a good stepsibling."

I couldn't help but laugh at his arrogant and teasing tone. "Well, I appreciate the offer, but I think I'll manage just fine on my own."

He gave me a playful pout, "Aw, come on. Don't reject me on our first day of being stepsiblings."

I couldn't resist teasing him back, "Oh, is that what we are now? I thought we were just roommates."

He smirked, "Well, we can be whatever you want us to be."

"You're such a boy."

As soon as he stopped the car, I got out with my bag on my back. I stared at the building with all the students walking around happily, engaging in their conversations.

Logan nudged me gently. "Nervous now?"

"What, no." I lie.

Logan laughs and nudges me forward. "Come on, I'll introduce you to my people."

As we walked into the school, Logan brought me to a group of boys in varsity jackets and two girls.

"Ouu Logan, who's this?" The brown haired girl asked excitedly.

"Everyone, this is April. She's my new friend." He says.

A friend? Friends is a stretch we're family by law.

All of them gathered around me, talking all at once. I couldn't remember all the guys' names, but the brown headed girl is Ally, and the blonde is Lauren.

"So, this is your group of friends?" I asked, looking around at the group of them.

Logan nodded, "Yeah, we've known each other since middle school."

I couldn't resist teasing him, "Ah, the stereotypical jock group. Do you guys have a secret handshake, too?"

He laughed, "Hey, don't knock it till you try it. And yes, we do have a secret handshake."

I rolled my eyes playfully, "Of course you do."

Logan shrugged, "Hey, stereotypes exist for a reason."

"So, April, what do you like to do for fun?" one of the guys, named Jake, asked me.

I smiled, "I love reading and playing sports. I used to swim competitively at my old school."

Lauren scoffed, "Oh great, another jock. Just what this school needs."

I could feel my cheeks flush with embarrassment as the group turned to look at me. But before I could respond, Logan stepped in.

"Hey, watch it, Lauren. Don't be cunt." he said firmly.

Lauren rolled her eyes and walked away, clearly not liking being called out by Logan.

"Don't mind her. She's just jealous. We're happy to have you as part of our group, April," Ally says.

As Logan's friends dispersed, he turned to me and said, "I have to go to practice. I'll catch up with you later, okay?"

I nodded, "Yeah, no problem. I'll see you at home."

As he left with his friends, I was left standing with Ally.

"So, do you have any classes with Logan?" she asked, making small talk.

I shook my head, "No, I just met him yesterday. But he seems nice."

Ally smiled, "Logan being nice? That's a shock."

"Why?"

Ally shrugs and walks with me to find my new class. "He's just been that way since his mom died. Closed off and stuff."

"Like mean?"

"No, just.. off. He refuses to talk about anything personal, so we just let him do whatever. He's just not the same."

I didn't even think about any of that. Logan and I aren't exactly close, and I know he's only nice to me because of the situation we're in.

"What's up with Lauren? She seems to have a problem with me." I ask.

Ally sighed, "Oh, Lauren and Logan used to hook up on and off. I think they still are, which is why she's mad about you."

"What makes you think that?"

"Because every time Logan and Lauren break up, Lauren starts dating someone to make him jealous. It's like a freaky game for them. Either way, they always end up back together."

That explains a lot.

I nodded, understanding the situation a little better now. "Thanks for telling me. I didn't mean to cause any drama."

Ally shrugged, "Don't worry about it. Just be yourself, and don't let her get to you. We all like you."

"So, how do you and Logan know each other?" Ally asks.

I hesitated for a moment, but I was not sure if I should reveal our new living situation. But then I decided there was no harm in telling her.

"We're actually step siblings now. My mom and his dad just got married," I said, trying to sound nonchalant.

Ally's eyes widened in surprise, "Wow. That's crazy."

I shrugged, "Yeah, it's still kind of weird for me too."

"I can imagine." She chuckles.

"Hey, do you want to come over to my place after school? We can watch a movie or something," I asked as we walked to the class.

Ally smiled, "Hell yeah, that sounds like fun. I'll be there."
