Corbin is worried so tries to take me home now, but the pain hits a crescendo as he tries to drive away from Zye.
“WAIT FOR ZYE!” I scream in pain.
“We don’t have time -” He starts.
“IT HURTS TOO MUCH… WAIT!” I close my eyes and know Zye is almost to the car as the pain eases an infinitesimal amount.
“Sorry, love. What can I do?” He says getting in the back with me and slamming the door shut. He then lifts my head onto his lap and starts stroking my hair, as a tear escapes and drips down my cheek. He can’t do anything. We need Kaiden, but that’s not going to happen.
“Just don’t… leave… Me.” I link as my teeth are gritted shut through the pain.
“FUCKING GO, CORBIN!” Zye shouts the demand, and Corbin has my tyres squealing as he slams his foot on the pedal.
“Love, I can get Kaiden -”
“No!” I state firmly. He doesn’t want us, we don’t want him! Then all of a sudden my fingers start to feel weird like they’re burning, so I lift my hand to look, and what I see freaks me out. Do you know how paper burns? The way it spreads as it slowly burns up the page, it’s kind of pretty to watch… Well, that’s what seems to be happening to the skin on my fingers, then it flakes away like ash in the wind.
“What’s happening!? This isn’t normal -” Zye exclaims in a panic. Corbin skids onto the driveway and then looks at my hand.
“It’s normal for her... Nyx, what do you -”
“Treasures!” I manage to cry out through the pain, and he nods and races into the house. Zye helps me out of the car and we realise my legs are doing the paper-burning thing too. I look at him and see how scared he is, so I put my hand on his face and smile to reassure him. He threads his fingers into my hair and pulls my head to his with a sigh.
“Tell me you’re going to be ok, Spitfire. I can’t lose you now.” He whispers.
“Never... I’m shifting… That’s all… back garden… Remove my clothes.” I pant out.
“OK, love.” He lifts me into his arms and carries me out back. He puts me down where I tell him to, and once I’m on my feet, he clicks his fingers and I’m standing naked in front of him. Corbin bursts out of the house with Aunt Krystal and Sage on his heels, as they have arms full of my treasures and then some. Zye even steps in front of me, hiding my naked body from view, which makes me smirk.
“Now what!?” He asks them over his shoulder. I pull his face to mine and kiss him, then I move back and close my eyes, letting instinct take over.
“Now we stand back to watch and wait.” Aunt Krystal tells him.
“What’s all this stuff - What’s happening?” He asks as I feel magic seeping out of my skin, taking hold of all the treasures and pulling them closer to me while hovering them in the air. Then I open my eyes when I feel my blood boiling with hot liquid magic.

I’ve never been so scared in my life. I didn’t even think about it hurting when she shifted, and listening to all her thoughts was heartbreaking. It made me want to punch Kaiden for being a dick. Then I remembered that my dad told me his dad was going to do all he could to get rid of Kaiden’s mate, and mine if she was a dragon… So, I understood why he was carrying on the way he was. It’s hard thinking of her as ours when it comes to that sort of thing because this isn’t something we were taught to expect when it comes to mates. Our mate is ours, a single-minded worry, but we will be sharing Nyx and each other.
