In my world, there are soulmates. They are your other half that fits you perfectly. It has been theorized that when you are created, they are also created in mind then later born. Once born it is your job to find them, that's where the soulmate link comes in.
Every link is different be a timer, feeling of pain, the red string, items being borrowed, writing on skin, the list goes on... everyone has one. Every person has a soulmate and is destined to be with someone, but that doesn't mean that they will meet that person. Some people die before that could ever happen and then their timer's stop, there is always anguish, the sting goes limp, nothing new comes, the last message is written on your skin, so much more... it's saddening.
You have a timer for my soulmate, it's not a rare link but was more than defined to be normal. Instead of a countdown like other timers, it was an infinite. Many people believed that it was a tattoo at first due to the fact that it's never a soulmate link, but yours is a timer that never goes down, never to decrease, never goes up. Except during one instance...
You were watching the first episode of an anime called One Piece, it followed a boy who wanted to gather a crew and chase his dream to be King of the Pirates. It was good and all, and you couldn't get enough of it, but you noticed that your timer started running. It scared you, seeing it run you had been so sure that the usual infinity eight was an indicator that it was take forever to meet your soulmate. You didn't understand how it could be running after watching one episode.
You thought it was a fluke, maybe your soulmate was just born? No impossible. The world has never had an age gap greater than 5 when picking soulmates. You are 23 it was impossible.
You paused the episode trying to think trying to reason with it. You couldn't stop overthinking, you looked at it, your breath caught in your throat. This wasn't real was it? Your timer stopped... you continued playing the episode, the timer continued to decrease as the episode went on. And would increase if you went back. Your soulmate was an anime character? How?
Someone had to be playing a joke, a sick one. Some god probably to try and find some amusement in the everyday life of boring human lives. What you didn't understand was, why you and why with an anime character? You are destined to be with one person in your life, sure you can always marry someone else but that one person is made for you. How can a 2D character, one you will never meet be the love of your life.
You felt your world growing out of control at the thoughts, mindlessly watching the anime to find that character. Sure you can skip ahead but really what was the point, you had to still get the storyline or it would have bugged you. You continued watching the timer, more than the anime honestly, taking note that it would take you a couple of days before your soulmate appeared. It made you both scared and excited. You were often worried given how some of the characters are, ones like Buggy and his crew, and the guy that makes his buggers explode. It's disgusting to say the least.
You signed in exhaustion of how this was going to work... "Who am I kidding... it's not going to work. My soulmate is a fictional character who doesn't exist. It's fate's twisted way of telling me that I have no fated future." You laughed looking at your timer as you finally entered Alabasta. It was a lot lower of a number than you had started. "At least my soulmate can never hurt me, impossible to do that when you aren't real. Still a sick joke there god." You groaned annoyed at the situation. Not like you could do anything about it, but continue watching.
"Hey (Y/n)!" Your roommate called from the front door. Great...
"Yeah what's up?" You responded but you already knew what was going to happen. You stopped your show, causing your timer to stop. You glared at it irritated that you can never have what she has. With a heavy sigh you grabbed your head phones and waited for a response before putting them in.
