The stone seemed to shiver in my palm illuminating my hand in a golden orange glow as I gazed at it. I never knew how to explain the pull I felt to it, the warmth that radiated from it when I held it.

I took another long drag from the joint before slowly blowing the thick smoke out into the living room. The air was already heavy with the smell of weed and whiskey. I had faced armies, toppled governments, faced off against world-ending entities without even batting an eye I killed mother fucking Rasputin but this scared me. The effects of the weed clouded my mind for a second before vanishing again. It never lasted long, quickly fading to let the wave of anxiety course through me again.

My fingers drummed against the side of the bottle rippling the amber liquid inside. Everytime I used this stone it was never to fix something, only to take it all away. The lie I loved to tell people that I was helping when I was really just taking the cowards way out. People died because of me Katy, Claire, Ethan, fuck even Peter and I keep telling myself I need to keep going for their sakes cause I need to preserve their memory. But the real truth was I wasn't supposed to be here anymore. How was I supposed to preserve their memory, their goodness when every second felt stolen like an imposter using someone else's time.

Fuck! The bottle shattered in my grip soaking my hand in whiskey mixing with my blood as my healing took over pushing the broken glass out closing the wounds. Raining glass shards into the blood whiskey soaking into the stained rug.

"Just you and me eh? Two mysteries all by ourselves." It's official Layla Jones has lost her mind talking to a glowing rock in her destroyed apartment.

The stone shivered almost as if it was responding, pulsing its strange orange glow. So many people had died because of this stone so many innocents had been ripped away from this world screaming. I could hear them from my cell, the screams still echoed into my nightmares even all these years later a constant reminder of the suffering humans can cause to one another. I had seen the guards drag their charred bodies to be discarded. Men, women, children, they didn't care if every one of them were stuffed into that machine to be burned alive by this stone. Each of them had been a son or a daughter to someone, a sister, a brother, a friend, a soulmate. And each of them were gone.

"So why me? Why didn't it burn me from the inside out every time I used it? Why didn't it rip my soul out and throw me through the arch? For fucks sakes!"

The stone seems to pulse in response to bad I don't speak pulsing ancient mysterious rock. God I really needed Claire or Katy; they always knew what the right choice was. When I thought I was dying I had made a choice I thought I made the right one but I can see the pain that choice caused now I was scared to fix it.

Don't be a lil bitch just do it! Fine! Fuck!

Taking one last hit from the joint I ground the burning end into jeans better to not burn the building down well I am healing from this.

Okay okay okay okay if I hesitate any longer I won't do it.

Like ripping off a bandage right? Breathing in deeply I reached down inside myself pulling it to the surface I reached out to the stone in my hand. The lamp began to flicker as my veins started glowing. My blood felt as if it was boiling as the stone began to burn my hand power began to build up inside of me threatening to blow.

Boom! A loud bang shook the apartment as my door exploded sending splinters of wood flying. Tony stepped through the broken entry in full armor his blaster raised ready to fire.

"Layla Jones! Your -!" Whatever Tony was saying was lost over the roaring in my ears as the energy inside became too much to contain.

See you soon Tony.

I gave him a weak smile before the energy exploded from my body and the world went black. I really hope this works whatever happens I am done running from this.
