Continuation of last chapter
"Do I look like someone that could do that?"
Weighing up his options it seemed that Beomgyu felt if he were to die it was simply meant to be, an act he would not prevent.
Beomgyu was never a strong believer in fate. At first, it was simply things that happened when they did but as his life progressed it started to feel more like the world was against him, the events of his everyday life predestined without the ability to differ.
"Care to answer?" Yeonjun asked, snapping Beomgyu straight back into reality.
He stayed silent but stood up to follow, displaying his choice without words. Yeonjun seemed to understand, taking the younger to his car and turning the heat on.
Driving through thin winding roads, bordered with trees that towered, blocking all views of civilisation, Beomgyu was almost certain he was being driven to his demise.
Yeonjun drove calmly, humming along to the quiet radio and taping his bony fingers on the steering wheel to match the beats of the music. The sound of the rain smashing against the windshield drowned out any noise that would be heard from outside.
As they drove on, it got steadily darker. Beomgyu lost track of time—it could have been ten minutes or an hour, he had no idea. His fear of the unknown faded as he felt the warmth around him. His eyes fluttered closed, and he drifted into a peaceful sleep, curled up in the passenger seat.
The car eventually came to a halt in front of an isolated home nestled far from the city. The headlights illuminated the bricks, encased in ivy vines that covered the exterior. The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth.
Yeonjun gently shook Beomgyu awake. "We're here," he whispered. Beomgyu blinked groggily, his eyes adjusting to the darkness outside.
They stepped out of the car, the sound of the rain now a distant murmur beneath the canopy of trees. The house loomed ahead, its windows dark and mysterious. Yeonjun led the way, his footsteps crunching on the gravel path.
Pushing open the creaky door, they were greeted by a wave of warmth and the faint smell of woodsmoke. The interior was cosy, with a stone fireplace crackling in the corner. An old clock on the mantel ticked away, the only sound breaking the silence.
Beomgyu looked around, taking in the snug atmosphere. Despite the isolation, there was a sense of comfort here. Yeonjun hung their damp coats by the door and motioned for Beomgyu to sit by the fire. "Warm yourself up," he said with a gentle smile.
As the flames cast flickering shadows on the walls, Beomgyu felt a strange sense of peace settle over him. The isolation of the forest and the warmth of the home created a perfect haven from the outside world.
"Would you like a drink?" Yeonjun offered a seemingly inviting request used to express his care for the other.
"Do you have tea?" Beomgyu uttered softly. He didn't want to be asking for too much having just been taken in by a stranger.
"Green?" Yeonjun inquired, flickering his gaze back to Beomgyu almost as if he were shocked that Beomgyu had had the confidence to ask him for something.
Beomgyu nodded shyly with a small smile. Yeonjun smiled back, his bony figure disappearing into another room assumed to be a kitchen.
Yeonjun returned with a steaming cup of green tea, the fire now calming into a steady warmth.
"You seemed like a green tea type of person," Yeonjun said softly, handing Beomgyu the cup and sitting himself in an armchair a few feet away.
Beomgyu accepted it with a nod but couldn't shake off the slight suspicion that had settled in his mind. As he sipped the hot tea, he felt the tension slowly melt away, replaced by a comforting calm. The gentle crackle of the fire and the soft clinking of the teacup were the only sounds, creating a serene bubble of tranquillity around them. Despite the warmth and the soothing drink, Beomgyu's eyes occasionally flicker towards Yeonjun, studying him with quiet curiosity and caution.
Decoding someone's mannerisms is a skill that takes time and analysis, and Beomgyu's limited time with Yeonjun only made it harder to settle. He fidgeted in his seat, eyes darting around the room, searching for something familiar to anchor his nerves.
"I don't expect you to be comfortable straight away, but whenever you're ready, I'll be here to listen to all the words you need to say," Yeonjun blurted, offering no further context.
Beomgyu's fingers tightened around the teacup, the warmth almost too hot to bear. "I don't—thank you—Um," he spluttered, narrowly avoiding burning his hand any longer.
"As I said, don't feel it necessary to talk to me until you want to. Would you like to go upstairs and get some dry clothes? I also have a spare room you can use," Yeonjun offered, perhaps a bit too eagerly.
"All of this for nothing seems a bit... not suspicious, but more of a..." Beomgyu trailed off, his voice shaky. Despite feeling something was a bit off, he couldn't afford to offend someone who had helped him.
"Shock?" Yeonjun finished, anticipating Beomgyu's thoughts before he could find the right words.
Beomgyu's heart pounded louder with each passing second.
"Let's make a deal then. You stay here for the next three days, and if you don't want to stay after that, I'll take you wherever you want to go and you'll never have to see me again." Yeonjun suggested in a more matter-of-fact tone than before.
Who would Beomgyu be if he refused the person who most likely saved him from a much, much worse fate?
