Chapter Sixteen
The car ride was awkward. We finally got to the house. Carter went tense as we walked up to the house. Karen went on mute but then spoked,
"Uh, Kate, were visiting some friends. They just moved here and their very rich." I nodded. We knocked and a middle age women like Karen opened the door.
"Come on in, come in. Its so nice you all could make it." She called, "Fi-on-a! We've got com-pa-ny!" but she stopped short when she saw me.
"Well, who's this?" she asked. Karen squeezed my shoulder,
"Kate." I shook hands with her and she shook it back.
"She's adorable." Karen was smiling widely. She was acting so hyper I couldn't believe it. The other women took me by the hand and whooshed a path to the kitchen with her husband. That girl, Fiona appeared around the corner, which made Carter grin and say,
"Hey Fiona. Looking good." Black skirt, black nails, black eyes -- for a nocturnal rodent, yeah, I suppose she was looking  good. They disappeared down to Fiona's room, probably, and when I turned around, my mother was talking to the husband, which left me alone. I just stood there, uncomfortable. Suddenly the women called,
"Hors d'oevours are ready!" and saw me still standing alone, "Kate, where is Carter and Fiona?" I shrugged, and that moment, they came out. I sat across from Carter. Everyone seemed to talk about the past. I just ate my food in silence.

By the time dinner was ready, I was ready to plop down and sleep. Carter hasn't even looked at me, his attention was all on Fiona. It's weird how she looks like me. Oh well. I was too tired to figure it out. All I wanted was to go home.
