LORALAI HATED CANOES

LORALAI HATED CANOES. Ever since she'd been tossed into the water by an Aphrodite kid in front of everyone at Camp Half-Blood last summer, she hated canoes.

Which is why, no matter how hard Caliz Chung, her sibling and long time best friend, tried to get her to be the redhead's buddy, she huffed and crossed her arms.

"Come on, Loralai!" She urged with a lighthearted grin. "You'll want to be more prepared the next time you have to go on a quest across the ocean."

Loralai scoffed. "Likely that's happening again."

"You never knoooow," Caliz sang teasingly.

Water glistened, reflecting the midday sun on Loralai's sunkissed features. Freckles littered across her nose. Her hair was tied up in a very secure bun. She was kind of good at that.

Approaching from behind, Oliver scolded, "Singing is my thing." He walked up to his girlfriend on the dock, who was defeatedly holding two pairs of ores, and gave her a quick peck on her scarred and pale cheek.

Loralai cringed and covered her view. "PDA warning, jeez."

The older girl flicked the ores in her direction, getting a bit of dripping water on Loralai, and chuckled. "Hey, forgot I have a boyfriend," she stated breathlessly, then sighed and gestured to the brunette, who rolled her eyes. "Don't need this party-pooper anymore."

The couple slowly and gently helped each other get on the canoe, the structure rocking back and forth ever so slightly with every moment, sending ripples through the deep blue. Trees loomed overhead, sheltering the dock from the boiling heat which threatened to make Loralai sweat— well, everywhere.

Luckily, the sweet scent of the strawberries and flowers, as well as the occasional overpowering smell of a camper boy's aftershave, would've cancelled any body odor out.

Oliver Caesar combed through his golden hair one last time before his blue eyes glanced at Loralai cheekily and he pushed off the dock with his ore. Even as they got further away, Loralai could tell he was cheesing about being able to row with his girlfriend for once by the way his Marilyn Monroe-type beauty mark curled up.

The girl rolled her eyes, again, irritably slicking back her hair, which was beginning to get frizzy with the heat. It didn't help with her mood. Neither did the fact that her second option, Nyssa, had already paired with Silena Beauregard.

To be honest, Loralai was about to give in to Caliz. She was a little taken aback when Oliver swooped in. Just like she was a little taken aback when a finger tapped on her shoulder, making her jump.

"Jeez, did you tiptoe over here or something, Seaweed Brain?!" she exclaimed, clutching at her chest.

He shrugged, tossing her a mischievous smile. "Yes, I did," he answered plainly. "My payback for your jump scaring me the other day."
