Rayne's pov
I woke up the next day and looked out of the window. It was overcast and looked like it would be chilly. I grabbed my backpack and scavenged the shelves again, making sure I hadn't missed anything. Once I was sure nothing had been left behind, I walked out of the station, ready to keep going forward.
The wind was chilly and I didn't have a jacket to keep me warm. I was walking by the trees, hoping they would protect me from some of the wind. The leaves on the ground were soggy, mud was pooling everywhere, and my feet were all wet from the small holes in my shoes. There was nothing I could do about it either, I was on a highway, there are no grocery or clothing stores around.
It started raining harder, and it was starting to get a little foggy. I had to be on high alert in case a walker would try to creep up behind me. A couple twigs hit me in the face here and there, but other than that, nothing happened.
The rain had stopped, but the fog stayed, and it got worse. I couldn't even see two feet in front of me.
"Help!" I heard someone scream. I could tell it was coming from in front of me, but I had no clue how far.
"Please!" They screamed again. I could either go and see what was happening, with only a couple bullets, or I could go into the woods and travel that way. They were screaming so loud there was probably more than three walkers, and I couldn't waste my ammo like that. I turned right into the woods and walked about fifteen feet in.
"Help!" The voice screamed again in pure terror. I couldn't risk my life for someone I didn't know. I walked right past as the person screamed again. I heard the faint growl of the walkers, and quietly walked.
"Not so fast." I heard someone say and I took off running. I couldn't see anything, but I kept moving forward. I turned right and kept dodging trees. My legs were moving incredibly fast and I heard the leaves crunching. I stopped suddenly and hid behind a tree.
"You know you can't hide forever. Once this fog clears, you're all mine." The voice whispered and I felt around the tree for any low branches.
"Come here." They said and I closed my eyes. Who was this? The man darkly laughed and I was frozen with fear.
"Come out, we both know I'm going to win." There was no way in hell I'd ever let him get me. I heard him a couple feet away and decided to make a break for it.
"You little shit." He yelled and ran after me. I almost hit a tree, but dodged it and kept running.
"I'm going to skin you alive if you don't stop." He yelled right behind me. I ran just a little bit faster and looked behind me to see if he was close. The fog was still so bad, and I couldn't see him.
"Bitch you better stop." He threatened, so I did. I stopped running and stood close to a tree. I tried to make my breathing as slow as possible so he couldn't hear me.
"We've got you now." He said heading in the opposite direction. I quietly stepped away, and tiptoed in the direction I was running in. I was careful not to step on any twigs or crunchy leaves. I took a deep breath and walked normally, for sure he wasn't anywhere near me.
Soon enough, the fog started to clear a little bit, and I could now see ten feet in front of me. I kept walking in the woods, not wanting to be spotted if there was more than one person.
After a while, the sun started peeking out, and the fog had completely cleared. I saw the edge of the woods and figured I had come to another road. I pushed limbs out of my way and stepped through the treeline. It was a railroad. I stepped onto the tracks and looked both ways, looking for any type of sign or something to tell me where I was at.
I turned to my left and followed the tracks, keeping the direction I was originally going in. The wood of the tracks were decaying, turning green and all sorts of yellow. To pass time, I would balance on the ends of the rails, and try to avoid the bolts. I focused on the rail, and not where I was headed, and my head ran into a big metal sign.
"Shit." I said, rubbing my forehead and looked up at the sign.
"Sanctuary for all, community for all, those who arrive survive." The sign read and below that was a map with a big star and the word 'Terminus' written in bold caps.
I read the map and saw that if I kept going straight, it would lead me right to Terminus. It sounded like if this place was still up and running that it might just be my saving grace. I had no clue if any of the others had seen this or not, but I know that if they had, they would be headed there, where they were promised survival.
I tried to memorize the map the best I could, and kept moving. I didn't know how long it would take me to get there, but I knew that somehow everything would fall into place.
The sky had cleared up and the sun was now shining, I'll take this as a sign. A sign that the sign I just saw, was good.
But even though I was feeling better about the situation, I couldn't help but think about the person in the woods. Why did he want me? It wasn't someone from our group because nobody has that voice. Either way, I wouldn't ever run into him again.
