A few hours later~
I check my blind spot as I switch lanes on the four-laned road. Ever since my accident I've been ten times more cautious driving. I double check the opposing lanes and keep in mind something my old driving instructor once told me, assume that the other drivers are going to mess. Always be on high alert he would tell me, I guess I should have listened then, but at least I've learned my lesson now. I switch on my blinker as I arrive at the driveway for Cailyn's kindergarten. I've left Tessie in Liam's capable hands and hopefully he hasn't given into her pleading to sneak desserts. We managed to get almost all of the decorations up before I left, all that was remaining was a wrapping a few of the presents and hanging up the piñata.
I've secretly invited a few of Cailyn's friends from kindergarten to come to the party, but she thinks it's just going to be for a playdate. So we'll have all of her friends and then there's Liam and I to orchestrate games and present opening and make sure no one has too much cake. My parents are coming down tomorrow for a family day, which should be fun. I plan to save some cake for them. I park the car and head inside to pick up Cailyn and the three other girls.
The car is much louder on the return trip home, the girls giggle and chat the whole way. I catch a few of them glancing at me and hiding a grin or laugh before looking away. They seem to be enjoying their secret. As we pull up into the parking lot of the apartment complex I remind them all to leave on their seatbelt until I've stopped the car.
We unload from the car, pausing to gather loose paper and to make sure that everyone has their respective bag and shoes. I walk behind the group as Cailyn leads them to our building and through the lobby to the elevator. It's there that I finally get a chance to speak to Cailyn since picking her up. I got to say hello of course, but I haven't really gotten to say anything more because she's been surrounded by friends. "Mrs. Shelley told me you got to have extra dessert for lunch today because it was your birthday." I raise an eyebrow. "That must have been pretty cool, huh?"
"Yeah, I got extra dessert and I got to pick first for the teams too. It was awesome!" She hops excitedly from one foot to the other.
"And which story Mrs.Kim read to us for story time first too." One of her friends, Rebecca, reminds her.
"Wow, it must have been an awesome birthday so far then!" I grin down and wink at the other girls who burst into giggles.
"Yeah?" Cailyn looks at her friends with some curiosity but seems to not think much of it. " It has been the best so far, I think."
"Well, I'm sure it can only get better." I nod, winking at the girls again who are know laughing so hard that one almost falls over. Cailyn helps her stand up, looking concerned and confused as we walk up to our apartment door.
