To my surprise, Tessie has offered to help me make dinner tonight. I suspect that she has ulterior motives since I know she would rather be playing. Neither of the girls have shown any interest in cooking, which is fine with me since I never did as a child either. Things go normally at first, she's asking questions about how quickly to mix the sauce for the casserole we're making and how long it will bake. But then something else pops up. "Mommy, do you think daddy will come for dinner again tonight?"
"I'm pretty sure that he said he planned to come." I pause to think. "Yeah I think he did. I can text him if you really want to know for sure if he is or isn't."
"No, it's okay." She starts turns back to her mixing.
Cailyn pokes her head in for a few minutes and watches us all work before crinkling her nose and hurrying out of the kitchen when I bring out the onions. Tessie giggles at her, but moves to the other side of the kitchen while I struggle to hold in a few tears that have already started to well up in my eyes.
A few escaped tears and an accidentally spill later, the casserole is in the oven and Cailyn has been called in to set the table while Tessie and I watch her. We cooked so it's only fair she help out with the table-setting.
"What is it?" I ask Tessie, noticing the weird look she has on her face. I think it's a happy expression, but her nose is all curled up and her eyes are squinted.
"Nothing." She grins up at me.
"You had a weird look on your face, I know it's something!" I poke her arm. "Come on, tell me."
"I'm just happy." She ducks her head in a way she knows makes her look really cute and shy. "Daddy has been eating with us and it's like we're really a family."
