Say What?

We ended the water fun and gathered around a gigantic bonfire. The guys had their shirts off to be dried. Nate sat between his parents while I squeezed between Pontius and Andy. Andrew was kind enough to donate marshmallows, so that was pretty much our dinner. We were silent with exhaustion and we were cold from the night breeze. Andy had his arm around me and I had mine hugging my legs. Thankfully the fire was toasty enough to keep us warm, so none of us had hypothermia afterwards. “Was that scary?” Rebecca asked Cubbie,

Cubbie nodded, “And it’s not funny at all.”

“Then why was Sean laughing?” I asked, “It’s funny but you don’t want to admit it.”

“It so funny that it got to the point where it goes downhill and everyone freaked out in there.” He nodded at the warehouse, “That was horrible.”

“Be honest, who came up with this?” Pontius demanded,

“It’s those duo right there.” Dylan pointed,

“Because we care about you guys.” I said in my defense, “We wasted our time to set you guys up.”

Andy nodded in agreement, “So, you gentlemen are most welcome.”

“So what about your pictures?” Pontius asked,

            I chuckled innocently, “They’re photocopied.”

            “They’re photocopied?”

“Why would I risk it, dillweed?”

“What about those monkeys? Did you train them?” Mark squinted at Andy and I,

“It’s their natural instinct when it comes to bananas.” Andy explained,

            “Ape-nanas!” Nate added,

            I chuckled, “Yea, ape-nanas.”

            “The note?” Sean asked,

“Isn’t my handwriting awesome?” I grinned,

“That was actually the meanest thing you’ve ever done to us.” Isom said,

“It’s worth the ten years.” I rolled my eyes, “Admit it.”

“And it’s going to take another ten years to get sweet revenge.” Pontius nudged me, “You better keep your eyes open, kid.”

I raised my hands, “I’m shaking.”

“Nate, I don’t want you to take those two troublemakers as example.” Cubbie pointed at us,

            Andy gasped, “Cubbie… I- why, that’s awful…”

Nate giggled, “You had fun, didn’t you?”

            “I didn’t.”

He poked Cubbie’s ribs, “You did, because you’re smiling now!”

He scooped Nate up and propped him on his lap, “I’m smiling because you’re here now.” Then he wrapped his arm around Rebecca, “And you too.”

“Well, the kidnapper needs to check on his Aphrodite and the little one.” Andy stood up and disappeared,

Pontius looked at me with an annoying smirk, “What? You’re going to check on your doctor too?”
