I have to admit Pallandino is a beautiful place, even from a distance. The sun was beginning to set just as we began to reach the edge of town, making the town glow spectacularly. Not many people had been in the streets, all inside from their day's work and enjoying dinner. We were heading to one house in particular - Jesse's grandparents'.
It was the house he had grown up running around in, he told me on our drive, spending as much time as his parents would let him. Sitting in the back of the automobile with me and Father and Wesley in the front, Jesse was trying to fill the silence with stories about his childhood here, but I could tell he was nervous. His fingers began tapping on his leg in a sporadic rhythm. Finally, I just had to take hold of it to stop him. He seemed to calm after that.
I do not think anyone was expecting us.
Wesley was the first one they saw at the door, greeting him with open arms, hugs, and kisses. Then it was Father, who they had met before. When Jesse's mother, Alma, saw me then, she rushed forward to give me a hug. But it was then that she looked over my shoulder, saw her son standing there, and screamed, fainting right there in my arms. It took both Jesse and his father Walt - staring at his son with wide eyes - to get her back inside and on the sofa.
I do not think his family - his older brother Jacob, younger sister Della, grandparents, and others - knew what to think of seeing him again after months of believing him dead. It was not until Jesse's mother opened her eyes again a few minutes later to see him still there that the tears began.
I will even admit I cried, too.
