I wake up to my alarm and throw it across the room, and it breaks against the wall. I crawl out of bed and walk into the bathroom rubbing my tummy. "Steph, why are you up so early," Scott asks knocking on the door. I answer, "Taking a shower before school." "Okay, but it's four in the morning," he says with confusion evident. I sigh, "I realize this, and I have to be at school earlier because of my missed school." "Ooohh," he says, "I'm gonna go back to sleep for like an hour." "Have fun," I huff and turn the water on. After I get out, putting on my uniform is so much fun, and my shoes are too even with the somewhat little bump I have. "Steph, Brett is outside waiting for you," mom says just getting back from her shift. I open the door and hug her, "Get some sleep, mama." "Have good day, honey," she says when I pull away, and I go out to my car to grab my bag. Brett swoops in behind me grabbing it before I do and takes my hand leading me to the car, and I sigh, "I could have gotten that." "I know, but I want you to have a less stressfulday than it is already going to be," he says kissing my hand then letting it go to open the car door for me. I sit and turn the radio up a little, and he plug my phone into the auxiliary outlet asking, "Who do you want to listen to this morning?" "Umm.. Halsey," I say, and he smiles and presses on the playlist.
Sitting in the office is boring especially when they already gave us our study guides for what we missed, but they feel the need to make an announcement before we go to our classes. The administration thinks it is better to let the student body know that we have been found because if Brett and I intergrate without them knowing, it would be disruptive. "Good morning, students. It is a beautiful spring morning, and we have especially good news. Our missing students have been saved, and they return to us today. They have been through a lot, so it is your duty as fellow classmates to make sure they are not unwelcome," the secretary says into the intercom, and two office aides escort us like we need to be protected from the students staring out of their classes as we pass them. I hear their murmurs and see them point, "Oh my god... Look... I think she's pregnant... What happened to them?" I reach Mr. Felk's classroom, and my peers make a hole for me to come inside. "Welcome back, Ms. McCall," Mr. Felk says as I sit in my desk. I nod, "Thank you." "I hope you know I'm here if you have questions about what you missed," he says softly, and I nod looking down because I don't like seeing the stares so open. Josh asks, "How do you feel?" "How do you think I feel," I say looking at him, "Everyone is staring at me like I'm broken or some freak." When I finish my sentence, everyone turns their heads away from me except for Josh, and he nods, "I see." "No, you don't, but that's okay. I don't expect you to," I say looking down at my study guide for chemistry.
Coach Nelson's class is more awkward because they got a new seating chart, and Brett and I are set front and center. "Class, turn to page two hundred thirty-five," Coach says, and I reach for my book, but he says, "McCall, I appreciate your usual moxie, you and Talbot just review what you missed." "Yes, Coach," I sigh, and pull out the packet. Caleb whispers to someone, "I feel bad for them." "I would hate wanting to go back to normal but couldn't," Alex whispers a little louder to where some other people heard. I turn to look at them and say with my voice raised, "Thank you for reminding me, Alex. I really appreciate it. Why don't you tell me more," Alex shakes his head, and I look at Caleb, "What about you, Caleb? Have anything to say? No? Good." "Steph," Brett says taking my hand, and I position myself back to the front. "Coach, may I step outside to calm down," I ask taking deep breaths. He gestures toward the door, "Be my guest." "Thank you," I get up and march out of the classroom. I dig my claws into my palms, so I don't hit anything. I think to myself, "I need to seriously remember to make an appointment with Dr. Deaton." "Stephanie, are you okay," Brett asks poking his out of the door, and I take my claws out of my hands. He comes all the way out takes my hands looking at them with concern written all over his face, "Oh, baby, I wish I came out here with you in the first place." "I didn't want to break anything," I mumble, and he looks into my eyes. He says, "You stabbed into your skin. That is technically breaking something." "I know, but I heal. Lockers and walls do not," I say looking down with tears in my eyes. He tilts my head up wiping the tear that escaped, "It's okay. Please, don't cry." I hug him, and he holds me, so I can feel the tension leave my body, "Thank you for everything, Brett." "I'd do anything for you. You should know that by now," he says as I pull away. Coach walks out and asks softly, "Are you two okay?" Brett and I look at each other then to Coach and nod. Coach holds the door open, so we walk in. I whisper into Coach's ear, "Can I apologize for my outburst?" "Go for it, McCall," he says, and I feel every eye on me. I face them and try to stay calm, "I am sorry for my little eruption. I am very sensitive right now, so it very well may happen again, but I hope you atleast try to understand that I don't mean to." The bell rings, and I just stand there awkwardly as everyone else leaves. Coach pats my shoulder, "I'm proud of your strength to get up and say that." "Thanks, Coach," I say then grab my stuff leaving to go throughthe same situation multiple times today.
"Stephanie, I would like you to try this song," Mr. Breven say walking into the practice room. I look at the piano sheet music, "Lost Boy by Ruth B.? I've sang this before. I sang it my freshman year at the showcase. I think you saw that when you considered my scholarship." "I did, but you have a different outlook now," he says, and I nod then take a seat at the piano. "And ever since that day, I am a lost boy from Neverland, usually hanging out with Peter Pan, and when we're bored we'd play in the woods always on the run from Captain Hook. Rruuunn. Rruuunn, lost boy, They say to me-eee-ee-ee-e. Awaayy from all of reaalityyy-yyy-yyy-yyy-y. Neverland is home to lost boys like me, and lost boys like me are free. Neverland is home to lost boys like me, and lost boys like me are free," I play and sing reading the notes, and Mr. Breven stands by the door. I feel a tear runs down my cheek and he says, "Different singing it now, isn't it? Raw-er emotions really do affect a piece more than you would think, Ms. McCall. I believe that you tend to let your emotions rule your art, and it is quite intriguing." "Very different," I say, "And my emotions rule more than my music. They basically run my entire life." "That is what makes you unpredictable when it comes to making a song your own, so it is okay," he says then exits the room.
I feel Brett's fingers intertwine with mine when I leave Solo Studies, and he kisses my cheek, "I know it was stressful today, but we got through it, beautiful." I smile as we walk to his car, but Blake stops us, "What is this?" "The end of the day," I say knowing what he actually meant. He gives me a look, "I know what that is, and you know what I was really asking." "This is us walking to Brett's car," I say giving him a look right back. He rolls his eyes and says, "It obvious that you are pregnant." I rip my hand from Brett and charge at Blake slamming him to the grass, "You seriously like pissing me off, don't you?" "Steph, let's just go home," Brett says picking me off the laid out boy and carries me all the way to the car. I cross my arms and say, "You know he deserved that." "Yes, but we can't do that even when he does because you could hurt our child or children, and you could go beast-mode and tear him to shreds. Neither of those options are available at the moment," he says sitting me in the passenger seat and shuts the door getting in on the other side. I sigh, "I know." "You know I still love you," he says looking at me, and I smile. I say, "You know I still love you too, Boo boo kitty." He laughs, "Why did you call me that?" "To hear you laugh, I love it when you laugh," I say as he drives, "It makes a little less done with the day." "I'm glad," he says taking my hand and kisses it.
