I arrived at Leighton's house at 5pm.
I had stopped at a bar, but had enough self conscience not to drink.
I took a deep breath and headed towards the door. I rang the doorbell, and a few minutes later she opened.
She looked adorable, with a big hoodie and sweats.
"Rob" she said, I smiled softly and kissed her.
"Where did you go?" She asked while I got in and sat on her couch.
"Mark's house, I needed to speak to him."
She nodded and sat down
"Did you eat? I can make you a sandwich or something" she said
I took her hand in mine, looking at our intertwined fingers and shook my head. The tv was on, Leighton was watching the E-news.
"Last gossip heard, the Downey couple, who recently split, are expecting! Isn't that a turn of events."
My eyes shot to the tv, where a picture of me and Susie before we broke up was shown, and then the picture of Susie coming out of the drugstore.
I looked at Leighton, who was shocked and was looking at the tv intensely.
"Is it true?" She said turning to me. Her eyes were already red
"Yes, but Leighton wait, don't jump to conclusions" I started saying but she stopped me
"Is it yours?"
I nodded
"The week before I found out about the affair we had sex. I was drunk, I don't even remember it that well." I said, she nodded
"Maybe you should get back together" she said, I looked at her, incredulous
"What? No way. I'm with you."
"Yes Robert, but you don't have a child with me. A broken family sucks, you don't want that for your baby. Do you?"
I wanted to say something, but she was right. Then, right on cue, my phone rang. It was on the table, and the name on the screen was clearly visible.
I looked at the phone, and then at Leighton.
"I'm going upstairs." She said, and walked away.
I got the phone
"Hello?"
"Robert. Are you okay? You hung up the phone on me before." She said
"Yeah, I was just taken back for a while." I heard her sigh
"I'm sorry, Robert. This wasn't what I wanted for us. I fucked it all up, but you gotta forgive me. If we have to raise a child together, we can't fight like cats and dogs."
"I know" I said
"If you want, the 30th I have the first visit at the doctor, you can come. I'll be in NY" she said
"Susie.. I always thought you were the woman of my life, and maybe you were. Then I met Leighton, even if you might think she's too young for me, she isn't. I am falling for her, I'm not gonna ruin that. I promise I'm gonna help you with the baby, but I won't let go of Leighton." I said
"I know Robert. Relax.
We'll talk when you're in NY."
she said and hung up.
I took a deep breath and headed upstairs to Leighton's room.
She was under the covers, her back facing the door.
I slowly closed the door and walked to the other side of the bed.
Her eyes were furiously closed.
I sat on the bed, brushing her cheek with my hand.
"Baby?"
"Mhmh?" She murmured
"I don't wanna let you go. You know that, right?" I said, getting closer to her, grabbing her hips and pulling her closer to me. She opened her eyes slowly and nodded
"I'm not gonna get back together with Susan. You're all I want." I said, she nodded again
"Tell me about Indio" she whispered after a while. My voice got caught in my throat. I never talked about him with anyone.
I felt her grab my hand and softly squeeze it.
"Well.. We don't talk a lot" I said
"He's 22. We stopped talking when he was 17. I had recently found out he was doing cocaine and thought maybe if I dropped out of the picture he wouldn't struggle like me. He has hated me since, maybe even before.
He couldn't forgive me for leaving his mother." I stopped talking, not knowing what else to say.
"Have you tried getting in contact with him Again?"
I shook my head
"It's too late now anyways." I said, she nodded and closed her eyes again.
"It's Christmas in 5 days." I said.
"Yeah" she whispered.
I knew she had two brothers, and didn't speak with her parents, that's all I knew regarding her family.
"Do you have plans?" I asked her, she shook her head.
"Wanna go to New York earlier? We can stay at my place. I have a house there." I said, she shrugged.
"Well, that's a plan. So you better be exited about it, I'm gonna prepare you an awesome Christmas that will kick the ass every other Christmas you have ever had."
she opened her eyes again, and giggled.
I smiled, and kissed her softly on the lips.
