Kirito x Reader - Beta Tester

"Well, I heard that she changes her weapon before every big fight!"

"Yeah, and I heard that she wasn't just a beta tester--she's related to someone who programmed the game! I'll  bet she knew what the creators would do once everyone logged on."

Two low-class guys were talking in a tavern--okay, nothing new. Badmouthing beta testers? That wasn't new either. However, they were talking about this girl like she was some kind of legend or something, which wasn't exactly normal.

The first floor had just been cleared, and with it came Kirito's rise to hate/fame. The introduction of beaters lessened the sting directed towards people who had played the game before it was released, but either those two guys hadn't heard, or this girl was something else entirely.

"Hey." He interrupted the guys, not even getting up to do so. As he earned their attention, he gestured for them to come over to the table he'd been sitting at. He didn't really want company, let alone from two random guys, but he wanted information. Their drinks and them sluggishly plopped into chairs opposite him.

"Who are you talking about?"

The two exchanged a surprised look. "You haven't heard about Y/n? Dude!"

"What about her?"

"Well, for starters, she's a complete badass."
"And she could've easily cleared the first floor herself, but she just messed around and built up her armory. Bitch."

"She has a house just near here, actually."
"She's already got a house?"

"Like we said, she spent the first month just...farming. She didn't use what she obviously knows to help anyone. Not a single person."

"I'm beginning to think that I should go pay her a visit."

"Uh...I dunno, man, she's really intense."
"Yeah, a friend of mine went and tried to join her, and when he came back he just wouldn't talk about it."

Kirito shook his head and stood up. "I'll be fine."

Reluctantly, one of the men told him where to go.

He paid for his drink, and then he left.

~~~
For some reason, he had expected the house to be some insane mansion, but it looked just like all the other buildings around town, except smaller.
It was off the beaten path a bit, so she'd probably constructed it herself. It was nice, dare he call it quaint. With absolutely no hesitation he knocked on the door, almost excited to meet this Y/n.
His reply was a flat; "Go away."
He frowned. "I'd like to talk to you."
"No."
"My name is Kirito. I don't want anything from you other than--"
"Kirito? Really?"
"...yeah?"
Heavy footsteps got louder and louder as someone ran to the door, and suddenly it was yanked open to reveal a wide-eyed (H/c), staring at him incredulously.
"Wow. It's you."
"How do you know me?" He scanned her features for familiarity, but came up empty.
"Never really met. I've ran into on a couple of different games. Come in?" Without waiting for any kind of response, she walked back into the house, leaving the door open. He was even more interested, now, so he followed her inside.
~~~

"So...why don't I know you, if you know me?" Sitting awkwardly on a sofa in the surprisingly soft living room of Y/n, he forced his mouth to move.

"This is the first game where I made my avatar after myself. Good luck, right? Usually, I pick a male character and mod it up to look intimidating. Imagine, I could've been stranded in this world as a six foot man with warpaint and tattoos." She laughed, the light sound filling the room.

"My handle is usually SkullCrusher24601."

This triggered his memory. He vaguely remembered repeatedly getting his ass kicked by a player of the same name and description.  To be fair, he did pretty well standing up to her. Back then, he assumed that SkullCrusher24601 was a thirty year old man who lived in his mother's basement and thus had more experience than him, and now he finds out that it was this girl?

"Why go with such a terrible handle?"

She smiled at this. "Well, same reason I chose a male avatar. I know that girls get more help, more treasures, and more doubt. I wanted to start level with everyone else, and with everything considered, everyone assumed I was a guy. Now what brought you here, really?"

That's smart. That's really smart.

"I heard some guys badmouthing you while I was getting a drink." He explained. "I got curious. Is it true that you were a beta tester?"

When she hesitated, he quickly added, "I was too, don't worry."

"No, I wasn't a beta tester. I was just a regular person, just as excited to get the game and see everything for the first time. Kind of wish I'd picked up cello in seventh grade, and not World of Warcraft."

"Why are you so selfish? From what I've heard, you're only out for yourself."

"I tried to team up with people at the start of everything. But, as more people died because I couldn't get to them in time, I decided that I wasn't going to deal with others. And I didn't start clearing floors because I didn't want to die. I didn't share my loot because I didn't have anyone to share it with." She shifted uncomfortably. "Is that good enough? Did you have any other questions?"

He'd upset her. She clearly didn't like her reputation.

"Well, just one other thing. Why don't you show me what you've got tomorrow? I mean, I want to get this done as quickly as possible, and even if you think I'll weigh you down--I won't."

"You want me to help you beat the game?"
"Yeah. Isn't that what you want, too?"

She gave him an uneasy look, but he could tell that she was in.

Watching the corpse dissolve into the atmosphere, Y/n couldn't help but grin. Her temporary partner stood opposite her, doing the same.

"I underestimated you, Kirito."
"And somehow, you're better than I thought you'd be."

"If anyone's going to finish this thing, it might as well be us, huh?"

"I think so."

Her grin faded into a soft smile as she holstered her weapon. "Well alright then. Partner."

"Woah, slow down there. If we actually call ourselves partners, we have to split loot." He gauged her reaction, because if he was going to work with her he'd need to know she wasn't selfish.
"Yeah, okay. That's fine. 70/30." She teased.

"50/50." He played along as they left the scene of the battle.

"65/35."
"Y/n." He groaned, pleading in his tone.
"Fine. 45/55."

"Y/n!"
