Curie, at this moment, couldn't have been happier. John had brought her along to go see if Doctor Jane Williams would be able to help their friend Valentine. She wasn't filled with as much hope as John was though. From what the men from the Institute told them, the doctor and Nick were a lost cause. She had no idea what to expect when they arrived at the cabin but she didn't feel it promising. She wouldn't dare say those words out loud though, she felt that John needed to let this play out on his own.

"Do you think Rhys and Haylen will make it back in time?" She asked as they walked down an empty path. If the world wasn't in turmoil, the hazy scenery would almost be picturesque.

"I hope so. We don't know how long this will take though. We might end up having to turn around and go home." He replied while keeping his eyes on the tree line.

She was relieved to see that he had hope but wasn't delusional. She wasn't looking forward to the walk home. She had a gut wrenching feeling that it was going to be much longer than the way here with a belly full of disappointment.

They walked in silence for most of the trip. The Soul Survivor putting his focus into keeping them safe. The last thing they needed was to run into one of the many terrifying mutations of wildlife running amok in the woods. She could hear a pack of wild dogs off somewhere in the bushes and the tell tale squeak of mole rats. She wanted to contend with niether.

After an hour or so, the pair found themselves huddled in a bush checking out the perimeter of the cabin. The mechanic whirring of a machine gun turret somewhere on the grounds was the only noise to be heard. It looked peaceful enough but the lack of activity had them on edge.

"How do you think we should approach?" Curie asked in a hushed whisper.

The Soul Survivor scanned the area a while, listening for anything suspicious. It was completely still. They could see candles burning in the shack but saw no movement from inside. After a moment, John shrugged.

"I say we just walk right up to the front door and knock."

Curie couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had to ask him to repeat himself, fearing she had not heard him correctly.

"I'm serious. Our provisioners come by here all the time to drop off supplies. The people of Jamaica Plain told us nothing dangerous. I say we just go up there."

"I don't know about you, but I'll keep my gun close. Just in case."

John nodded in agreement before kissing Curie on the cheek, for luck. Curie had agreed to keep watch for a time, in case anything tried to ambush him. She had agreed to wait five minutes, not a second more, and if he had not returned she would come for him.

She watched as he slinked out of the bushes, his agile form almost gliding in the soft light of dusk. He moved across the shack, his back to the wall, listening again for anything. He gave Curie a small wave before he disappeared around the corner. She was left alone now with only her thoughts and the humming of the turret.

She waited for a few minutes and soon saw movement in the house. Through cracks in the rotting wood she could see shadows flickering about, hopefully John's shadows. She could hear the low mumbling of John's strong voice carried on the wind. It hadn't sounded distressed, so Curie chose to hold her ground. She would give the man his five minutes. As the time was drawing close, she saw the Soul Survivor swing around the corner, waving. She stood quickly and rushed over to him.

"Curie, the doctor isn't waking. I need help."

Without another word, she followed John into the shack. The smell found her before her eyes could adjust to the candlelight. The overwhelming stench of ammonia was making her synthetic eyes water. Cats. It had to be cats. Curie had nothing against cats, but she failed to see their usefulness in today's harsh world. She imagined that in a time before the war, she could get lost in a deep cuddle puddle of the soft fluffy creatures. However, in the Commonwealth of today, Curie was more of a dog person.
