Phantom Pains

The pain had faded so long ago, but he remembered it always.  His stumps ached as though they still had limbs, yet he knew that it was all in his head.  The soreness was so intense, all he was able to do was scream.  The loud baritone screams rang throughout the medical center, and his memories.  He could still recall the day it finally lamented a bit, for the first time since his operation he could rest.  However, it still lingered like the days before.  The fear that it would be everlasting, the anger at the lack of a quick resolution, and the pain itself; he devoted all of his time to focusing on those constant feelings.  His master came by everyday to check his recovery progress, but he never revealed his strategy.  Eventually, the long awaited day arrived when his pain became just another memory.  As he walked down the corridor that day many years later, to inspect the prisoners, a twinge of pain surged from his right arm.

Damn phantom pain...
