HAPPY READING!!

I never got to spend Christmas or New Years with the Hansen’s. I was rushed via carrier back to Anchorage where I went through the same volley of tests I endured years ago. Again, I came back with a clean bill of health. Besides some fatigue, I felt normal as well.

Chuck and Herc were so worried about me that they rode in the plane with me back to Anchorage. Chuck wouldn’t let me three inches from him and Herc watched me with deep concern. They wouldn’t leave until they saw I was in good health and able to get around on my own.

“I‘m fine, guys really.” I repeated for the uptenth time that hour.

“You Drifted with a Jaeger, with no co-pilot. We just want to make sure your alright.” Herc said, leaning against the doorframe of my room.

Suprisingly, they hadn’t touched my room after I left. Everything was as I had left it in the Anchorage dome. Which was almost exactly how the brother’s had left it in the time they’d been gone. Except the discarded clothes were in neat piles in the dresser drawers.

“I am!” I exclaimed, throwing my hands up in the air then resting them on my hips. Chuck sat quietly watching me from my single bed.

“I‘ll be back.” Herc said, moving to exit the room.

I know he knew something was up. We all knew I shouldn’t be this healthy and like my usual self after piloting an almost 300 pound monster sized robot. And I just knew that he was going to try and find out why.

“Herc.” I stopped the man and he turned to look at me, his arms still crossed over his chest as they had been while he watched me from the doorframe.

“I really am alright.” I tried once again to reassure him, and the all too quiet Chuck, that I was just fine.

“Sure thing, squirt.” He threw me a slight smile before disappearing from the room, hitting the button to shut the door as he left. I turned to face Chuck.

The younger co-pilot had been strangely quiet the whole plane ride, examinations and during dinner. Only giving me one word answers and nodding, all he wanted to do was keep his arm protectively around me and watch me.

“So this is your place, huh? Homey.” Finally, something other than ‘yea’, ‘no’ or a shrug.

“We may be the ‘Icebox’ but we keep our Ranger‘s as happy as we can.” I stated, walking over to the bunk bed adjacent to mine.

Raleigh’s bed barely creaked under my small weight. Something else the doctors had told me was that I was almost to the point of malnutrition. That I needed to gain at least 10 to 15 more pounds to even be considered healthy. That had really startled the Hansens, who asked tips on how to get me to gain some weight back.

“This was-?” Before he could finish, I nodded simply.

“Yea. We were roommates after my first roomie tried to kill me in my sleep.” I met his disbelieving eyes.

“Your kidding me?” He scoffed, chuckling slightly.

“She was crazy.” I shook my head, smiling at the crazy memory as I rose from the bed, walking to the mini fridge.

“Want a drink?” I asked, holding out the bottle of flavored vitamin water to show him what I had.

“Sure.” I tossed him the bottle in my hand and grabbed one for me. Shutting the fridge with my foot, I cracked the seal and waited till Chuck took the first swig of his before I drank mine.

“What is this stuff?” He glanced at the label before holding it out for me to see.

“It‘s pretty good.” I smiled at him.

“Glad you like it.” Walking over to him, I sank down on my bed beside him.

“So are you going to be staying here?” Chuck asked, and I looked around the room.

“I don‘t know. You guys need to get back to Sydney though, what if there‘s another attack?” I tried to reason, knowing what was to come of this conversation.

“I think the other rust bucket in that bay can handle it without us.” I shot him a look at the same time that I swatted his arm. Vulcan Spector was a great Mark-3 Jaeger.

“Chuck.” I chided before taking another drink from my bottle.

“If I go back and you stay here, what happens to us?”

My breath caught in my chest and I nearly choked on my drink. I’d thought long and hard about what could happen after I left. We could try to continue our growing friendship or…

“We move on.” I said after a long silence.

“What if I don‘t want to move on?” Chuck turned to face me and I launched to my feet, leaving the now closed plastic bottle discarded on the floor.

I ran a hand through my recently cut hair. I’d made the decision to take off a few inches after the first couple of 100 degree days. It now sat three inches below my chin in curly layers. Since I’d gotten it cut, the curls seemed to define themselves more and now I always had perfect ringlets. Chuck had absolutely hated it when I got it cut, and tugged on it constantly, saying he was making it grow out that way.

“What would you do if I got down on my knees and begged you to come back to Sydney with me?” Finally, I looked at him.

And the look of desperation and need was breaking my already dust consistency heart. I wrapped my hands around the back of my neck and just looked at him.

“Your everything I‘ve ever wanted, Lila. You keep my stupid ass in check and put up with everything I throw at you with that beautiful smile.” The sweet, and slightly funny things, were doing painful things to my heart.

“Hell, my dad and I actually get along now, thanks to you.” There was nothing I could say, all I could do was watch him.

He rose from my bed to stand inches from me. Resting a hand on my cheek, he glided his thumb over my skin softly.

“Chuck-” I tried, my voice breaking but he scooped up my hands, gripping them tightly.

“Please, Lila. please come back to Sydney.” He was pleading now. And it made my heart hurt even more at how true his words were. This was his way of telling me how much he cared. Chuck never pleaded for anything.

    “I need you.”

I was falling in love with Chuck Hansen. There was no denying that, I knew that after we had started being friends. And I wanted to love Chuck like he deserved to be loved, to love him as much as he loved me.

At the same time, I was scared shitless that I’d loose him like I’d lost everything else in life that I loved. My parents, my grandparents, Yancy and Raleigh… I knew that if I let myself love again, that there would be nothing left of me. The tears I’d been fighting so hard to keep down started to leak slowly from my eyes.

Chuck released my hands and wiped away my tears as I cried softly. After most of them had stopped, he took a small step back and dropped straight to his knees.

“Don‘t-!” I exclaimed but he reached up, gripping my hands and rubbing small patterns in them with his thumbs, like he always did when he had a hold of my hand.

“Lila Yale, with everything I have, please come back to Sydney.” All I could do was look down at him.

In that moment, I knew that Chuck really wanted to be with me. With all my flaws, damage, and baggage. He knew about how depressed I was after I lost the brothers, and had stayed with me when I couldn’t sleep from having nightmares. He knew just about everything there was to know about me.

Still knowing all this, there he kneeled, staring up at me with his heart on his sleeve as he waited for me to answer.

All I could do was nod my head, with a slight smile on my face as I tried to wipe my stray tears. The first smile I’d seen since my Drift with Striker graced Chuck’s face and he rose to his feet quickly, wrapping his arms around my middle and pulling me into him.

His lips found there way onto mine and I immediately responded, moving closer into him and sliding my arms around his neck. I could feel his joy and excitement in the kiss. It made me smile into the kiss.

“Thank you. Thank you so much!” Chuck said after we parted.

“You’re the best!” Like he loved to do, he scooped me into his arms and swung me around. I had learned to just hold on and enjoy the ride till he was done.

“Chuck.” I laughed as he finally set me down.

His hands found there way back to my face as he looked into my grey eyes with his blue ones.

“I‘m doing this for Striker.” I played, poking him in the chest.

He flashed me a Cheshire grin and rolled his eyes.

    “Sure you are.”
