You decide the best bet is to finish it off. You thrust down with your sword as hard as you can. The griffin blocks your blow. It slashes out with its claws and you cut its paw off. It howls in pain.
You take the advantage and slash out again. This time, you pierce its heart. You hear it shreak as its body becomes limp. Pulling back your sword, you look in amazement as you realize you just killed the griffin. You think it's too good to be true.
As you are about to put your sword away, it jerks up, claws extended. You move the point of your sword to be directly in its path, and as it pounces forward, your sword digs again into its heart.
The force of the griffin pushes you backwards to the ground. You let go of your sword and scramble back to avoid being squished by the beast.
Breathing hard, you check to see if it really is dead and, when you find it is, you prepare for the long journey home.
