you once did not
have dark circles
that lived on your face.

you once did not
have hands
covered in cuts,
hardened with work.

you once did not
go to bed
with your children mad at you
on the other side of
the wall.

you once were not
burdened with bills,
mortgages,
loans,
and payments.

you once had not
heard all the insults
that were thrown at you
— doesn't spend enough time with her children,
doesn't care enough,
doesn't work hard enough.

you once did not
have to work so many jobs,
leaving your bones weary
and tired.
but the children at home
wait,
and so you must
persist,
despite being out of breath
and seeming to
never have the time
to catch it.

you once were not
hurt by the world
you strived to
protect.

- i wished i knew my mother
before the world hurt her.
