when you settle into
the darkness,
does it feel
as if
everything's in the
right place?
as if the world
was always supposed
to be this
dark and silent?
but then the
headlights of cars
speed on by,
leaving a trail of light
that streak by
and disappear
before you can even think about it.
and all the city lights
and lamp posts
start to light the street,
trying to make up
for the sleeping sun.
and all the light switches
in the neighborhoods
turn on,
lighting homes after homes
until it stretches so far
that the end just illuminates
with false light.
and even though,
the world seems to be
at home
when it's shrouded in darkness,
someone,
somehow, in someway,
turns on
the switch.
