Go, my dragonrider begged. Go, now. I jerked my finger from Dax's bare skin.

The wizard staggered back, eyes unfocused, shaking his head.

Reality rushed back as I smartly skirted him and headed for the door, all the while keeping a wary watch over my shoulder. From the safety of the doorway, I summoned a glare.

Dax waved at me. The bastard was spelling me again but I shrugged off the urge to go to him.

"Enjoy your supper," I snapped. Before I pulled the door shut, his puzzlement changed to bewilderment.

I trembled all the way to my bedroom and, once I dropped the locking bar in place, I threw myself on the bed. For some time, I lay breathing like a beached fish.

Sitting up, sighing, I realised I had yet more unanswered questions.

Rufus... Jarryd...

I listened.

Rufus...

Naught. There was not even a vague sense of dragon.

My mindpath was gone.
