That night, Mother calls Zaina and Aunt Eeive over for dinner.
Tonight, I'll ask her everything, I think,
tonight, I'll open my heart.
My skin h u m s with nervous energy
as Suki and I set the table.
The dining room smells like fresh samosas
and the smell of fresh rain is wafting in from the open window,
it's home in the best of ways.
RING~
I rush to the door
and swing it open to let in our guests.
A loud chorus of voices rush in,
"Assalamu alaikum Harmony!
Are you okay?"
Aunt Eevie hugs me,
then I feel Zaina hugging me from behind,
I'm surrounded in concerned family members and friends
and my heart settles for a moment,
"Yes, thank you.
I'm okay now."
